rear diffenential

I have a 2003 nomad that has a whine in the rear. Have serviced the rear, replaced the rear bearings, serviced the drive shaft and replaced the u-joint. It is looking like it may be the rear bevel gear. I am now looking at replacing the differential with one probally from ebay. My question is what other years will fit my 2003. I am at work and will have to check back for any answers.
Thanks

They really are proud of the new diffenentials at the dealer.

A new differential isn't going to fix bad bevel gears or bearings. Figure out which is making the sounds.

A good diff can whine if the lash is incorrect. the ring and pinion must engage just so, which is tested with dykum a blue stain made to show where these gears ride one another.

The bevel gears can whine too, and if the bearing is bad that will set up a whime as well.

Get the rear wheel off the ground safely and run the engine with a helper. The helper must also run the gears up with the brake on a little to simulate the road. With a tech stethescope or a long rod, you don't get to near that wheel, listen. Make a quick test at each place, no sence frying brakes.

I think any year final drive will fit, but especially the 99-04 models. Id try to narrow down the problem before you use the bike much more.If its the bevel gear youll be doing damage by running it. If its your final drive whining your bevel gear should probably be fine.
A used final drive from Ebay is probably your best bet, providing its a good one.

Does the whine get louder with the throttle , what I mean is when you give it more throttle does the whine get louder or does it stay the same?

I think Ring is right, but after 04 you get a black painted case, not polished alloy.

I would also make damn sure it was the rear diff. vs. some road/tire noise. I noticed some unusual noise from behind me earlier this summer...it would come and go a little...finally realized it was that noisy Elite 3 and when the pavement changed, the noise changed a little. It sounded an awful lot like gear noise at first.

Todd I am with you. My first thought was rear tire. Could be a lot of little things with the tire. I would definitely start with the least expensive to check out and make sure everything is right with the tire.

When the bevel gear bearing in my wife's Nomad went bad, it was alot more noticeable when I let off the throttle. Apparently when the bevel gear first started to whine she thought it was the rear tire up until it really started to howl.

I experience a whine which appears to be coming from the rear end and it seems to occur when driving in 4th or 5th gear at only some RPM's. Could this be normal?

It can be just tire noise, tires get noisier as they wear, especially while cornering, and sometimes the pavement or concrete you are on can make a noise. It can be normal.

Listen to the gear box and bevel gear on a lift with a light drag on the rear brake.

Gear whines are usually a semi constant louder with speed, or start in decel.

Tires can make some scarey noises. Recently I was on the brakes hard and no sooner done all the tires noses from before were different, and the new noise is similar to a car horn on corners, scares me as it is random, and depends on road surface.

I hear what seems to be a car horn, and see nothing, which sets up the panic feeling.

I agree with Todd. Check out the cheaper "easier" to explain symptoms before tearing into something not broken. Last year in Custer riding to Devil's tower from time to time I heard a real loud almost pathetic whining sound coming the behind. It took several hours to realize Todd was riding behind me and whining because we had passed up yet another Tastee Freeze without stopping! .....
