Yes, another tire thread......

I know there are numerous tire threads and there is a manual showing how to remove / install the wheel & tires. However I want an honest assessment on how difficult and time consuming it is to do this yourself. I need a new tire on the rear and I am trying to save some cash.

Thanks
Nubbs

What bike ? Belt or shaft drive ? Either way its not too difficult. I presume you have a motorcycle lift ?

If you don't want to wrestle the tires off and on the rim, you can save considerable cash by removing the tire/wheel assembly and taking it to a shop and let them bust it down and install the new tire on the rim. I used to be able to get that done for $10-$15 locally. It will take them 5 minutes.

speaking from experience you will save enough money on one tire change to buy a bike lift. bike shops hate pulling the rear tire off baggers.

Its not that hard, but will take about three or four hours to do. Getting the wheel off and back on is the largest part of the job. There are many posts here that explain how. I do my own tires and it takes me about 15 minutes to change the tire on the rim with tire irons.

This is what your bike will look like after you remove the rear wheel.

Only you can decide if you want to do it.

Do you??

Ok thank you all for the replies. I am heading out to Washington DC in about 4 weeks and need a new rear tire. Recumbentbob, not really a mater if I want to or not, more of a matter of can I? I am great at tearing things apart, putting back together is another story....lol
Just talked a friend of mine who owns a small custom shop. He is telling me he can do the tire and install for $180.00 but he is also stating that is teh cost of the tire and one hour labor. I know he will take a small hit on the proft but may take him up on it this time around, as I dont want stuff falling off as I head to DC...LOL
AGain thak you all very much for the knowledge!

I guess I'm glad to live where I do. The tech I used for 25 years, retired 2 years ago.
He sold tires at volume prices and installed them for free. The new shop I'm using sells
tires at the same pricing that Bob used. But they do charge for mounting them.
When Bob was in business, he gave you a time to show up, and he would remove,
change the tire, balance and reinstall in about an hour. He is a very talented man.
He's in Tennesee someplace and is probably selling tires there.

Theres no way he will be able to do the tire change in an hour, $180.00 for the tire seems about the right price, letalone the labor.

$180 for a rear tire including install seems like a deal to me.
