I went ahead and removed the ugly saddlebag reflectors... But the question remained, what to do about the holes it leaves... Well I found a way to fill them, and it is super simple and cheap. I have attached some photos to show what I used...
First, use a 3/8 drill bit to make the holes on the interior of the bag when removing the factory screws. At Lowes you can buy plastic snap it hole fillers in black that fit perfect and blend right in. I added some silicone glue, and they look like factory, as much as it can. As for the exterior holes. Also at Lowes, I bought some black automotive push in style fasteners. I have attached a picture so you know exactly what to buy. They are 80 cents a pair! I then snipped off the point, and lathered both the hole and plug with glue. Press them in and then wipe the excess glue off with alcohol. They look pretty clean in my opinion, and unless you are looking for it, they could have come this way from the factory. I have a total of $7 in this mod! Here are my pictures. The one with the entire bike is a work a work in progress... Still blacking out more chrome, but you can see where I am going with the project...

lowes has plugs specifically for that purpose. they have more of a domed top and sets much flatter. I use them to cover the holes I drilled to mount the custom made sissy bar strap I made while I wait for the sissy bar to arrive. i'll get some pics up later. there was a post with someone that had used these same plugs in the holes left when he removed his reflectors. i'll see if I can locate the link to it and post.

Bringing this thread back from the dead mainly because it took me so long to dig it up and it's great info. I did this mod today and the measurements on page 2 were spot on. The black plugs are great for black bikes but I had seen in another thread that Custom Dynamics Magic Spots (Part # 2040-1047 for Amber) fit perfectly to cover the holes and you can wire as you wish (I plan to wire as turn only, hence the amber).
I was really pleased with the outcome; the magic spot wiring is on one end of the bar and the fit so exact that you can use the reflector holes to run the wiring on one end and line up the other end without worry of putting them on crooked. In my opinion they blend right in with the handle and hinges...

Got everything wired up and combined it with the tail end mod jstephens helped pioneer as well. Here's a shot with the right signal blinking....

One thing I noticed though after I setup a temporary connection...While everything works, both front and rear turn indicators flash quickly like one of the bulbs is burned out. Any thoughts on that? Finally some nice aftermarket Vaquero Parts !! http://www.mortonscustom.com/vaqueroparts.html Especially the Rear Turn Signas Beautiful shape !! I contacted Mortons and Doug Morton got back to me about installation. He said they go on with 3M Double back tape. I questioned this and he said they have personally installed 4 sets. WITH TAPE I am waiting to hear back about what Years. Must be Newer Vaqueros...2015/16, 2016....... Mines a 2012 and I believe it is the screw on reflector. Any Newer Owners care to opine?? |
