Hwy 17 Up the Coast
My son and I are going to make a bee line for FL next week. Once there, we hope to follow hwy 17 back up to Myrtle Beach. It appears that the real scenery begins in Savannah. I was thinking about following the interstate to there and picking up 17. Anyone have any suggestions? Must see sights?

Don't mess with 17 until you get to exit 33 on 95 in SC. From there it is a great ride except for the Charleston area, especially Mt Pleasant. But as you leave Charleston you ride through the Francis Marion National Forest. Then up until Myrtle it's a nice ride.
I used to live in Charleston and have ridden that route many times. MT

Not sure Coach, we've talked about making our way to the Jacksonville area and heading north from there. My son is a history buff and wants to spend some time in Charleston. So, we probably won't spend much time in FL. We are meeting my wife and the rest of the kids in Myrtle Beach on Memorial Day.

Can't answer any of your questions, but I wish you and your son a safe and sunny journey.

Sneed, I am in Jax, perhaps we can get together when you get here?
If your son is a history buff then you should plan to make a ride down A1A from Jax to St Augustine and visit the fort, old town, port, etc... It's a real nice ride of about 20 miles and St Aug is the oldest city in US. I will be around before the holiday and could probably lead you down. Might even get some of the other KawaNow'rs to stop in. Also the ride from Jax/Mayport on A1A up to Amelia Island is a must do if you are going north. Then as Tim says, the super slab (I-95) through GA is probably best choice. I would take the exit to the "Low Country Arts and Historical Museum" in SC that puts you on 17 along the coast. I think it is the Ridgeland exit and maybe #8 or 13? The trip up past Huntigton State Park, Ladys Island, Paris Island, Beaufort, and on to Charleston is worth doing if you have the time. My phone is 904-476-1108 and feel free to give me a call if you need some guidance or want to get together for a burger. Ross

Thanks trosco. We aren't sure of anything right now. We will be finalizing our plans probably Monday. We may have to opt out of the FL part of the trip and head straight for Savannah. My son is only 12 and I don't want to overload a day with too many miles. If we don't catch you this time, I'll probably be back down in July. My nephew is a Marine recruiter somewhere in the JAX area and his wife is expecting then.

Most important is make it fun for the little guy. If you make it here now or in July give me a little warning and maybe we can get some of the FL folks together for a meet and eat!

Myrtle Beach on Memorial Day weekend is not the place to be IMHO.

Yeah, I know what you mean. We got here on Monday. Ended up camping at the state park on Monday night. We came into Myrtle Beach and got a room on Tuesday. It is basically empty. There were some "bikers" with back patches in a car that wanted to punk my family. I wouldn't have wanted to be here last week.

Be sure and check out Savannah if you get a chance. Lots of things to see there.
