I agree desertdog. When it's time I'd rather rebuild what I have than buy used. Also, like you said, much cheaper than buying a new bike.

I have to wonder just how many pistons had been produced up to the time this failure occurred. Pretty good odds on failures. As for the filter type.......this failure sounds isolated and the toss up is the tappet. But still I love my Nomad, kind of like listening to a Caterpillar Locomotive, all ways a new noise and is dependable as hell.

New bike for $2200 sounds good to me, its the LOOK and feel that makes you go zoom.

What PJ&Bee said....noisey as hell, dependable as such, too....The times I can count that I've seen a piston failure in a 1500 vulcan? 2 times....Once I pulled down a engine for a customer friend, he had a bad burnt piston. Running all out, all day, with wrong plugs.
Another caused by a gasket leak up on the head, sucking cold air oil when closing the throttle. 3 others, pistons worn out.... wristpin&skirt, skirt&wristpin, slight gauling cause of oil pump gear failure.
I've worked on alot of the 1500s, more than 35, and I will say a catastrophic failure such as the piston we've seen earlier in this posting, is a once in a million occurrence.
The Vulcan 1500s are too well built and crafted for that to happen without a total lack of maint. and bike upkeep....when something like that does happen, its a freak occurance

That's the same thing that happened with me I just did my rebuild right before I deployed and I had about the same mileage 66,000-/+ on mine as well.

Sounds like it might've had either a bad piston, might've dripped some carbon on top of said piston (creating a hot spot), or piece of ring welded in groove, created a hot spot and ate the piston. Just lucky the bore wasn't damaged.
Did the bike sit up at anytime during one bad winter? Condensation, or washing the bike and getting water in thru the intake could cause this also....
The 1500/1600s are super reliable, so, I would consider this a fluke. This is one of the reasons why folks need to blow the carbon out often....
If everything was gone thru, a really good quality rebuild could be closer to $2000, maybe $2200, depending on what was done,
Good news is your bike will be ready for 150,000 miles of trouble free cruisin'....

What do you mean "Blow the carbon out"? What's the process?

Run it in first, second and third gear don't shift up until you hit the rev limiter in each gear.

If my bike has been Ivanized will it still have a rev limiter?
