I'm Famous (sort of)

I recently got on a MC safety forum and after a few posts I received a private message from a guy in California asking if I was the guy on the hot Kawasaki that used to ride around Carmel Valley back in the early 80s.

I couldn't believe anyone remembered me from my days at the Naval Post Graduate School. Back then I was riding the Kawasaki 1100 Spectre. Fast, comfortable and good looking. Able to handle the twisties or take you down the highway for hours at a time. I think it was one of their best bikes ever.

One of my favorite things to do on those mountain roads back then was to fly up behind the monkey humping a football riders who thought they were cool then sort of sit up like I was out for a nice cruiser ride as I passed. One of my pet peeves with no basis in any sort of logic has always been that so many people think wearing a cowboy hat and sitting on a horse makes them a cowboy. The same with MCs. Buying a fast bike with matching gear doesn't make you a good rider in my book. Only now days I don't pay much attention to them. I probably have my own delusions that people find amusing.

I used to have a KZ650 and loved riding everywhere on that thing. Wasn't as comfortable as my Nomad, but I was a little tougher back then too.
One of my pet peeves is the people that buy a $20000 bike, ride it 5 miles to the nearest bar twice a month and call themselves a biker.

It is amazing that so many people just have to have a bike. Spend that money and like you say ride it to the store or where ever. Be lucky if they put 2000 miles a year on the bike.

Who cares if others buy a bike and only ride it to the store or bar? It's their life. It amazes me that something as trivial as this would bother people.

I could be wrong but I believe that is a developed attitude. I remember so many times Harley riders would bust balls if you owned something other than a Harley. From my experience those same people are the bar or candy store hoppers. You know, the harley riders that go someplace close just to sit and talk about what they did to the bike and how much it cost, but put limited miles on the bike.

Personally I don't care about what those riders say and it sure as hell doesn't bother me they sit at the candy store. I just bust their chops back and tell them when they need a wrench that I carry tools for them.

Don't get me wrong I ride with many Harley riders that I consider friends, but most are not the candy store rider either.

PS. When I was talking to an owner of a motorcycle store recently he mentioned the average rider, at least in the NE doesn't even put 3,000 on their motorcycle in a season. (I believe that it must be that crotch rockets are low mileage vehicles).

Wow, I guess Cindy and I aren't average NE riders
She put 30,000 miles on her 2008 750 Shadow and traded it for a 900 LT a couple months ago. She has almost 4,000 on that already.
I have 45,000 on my 2007 Nomad.

Why is it when I go this site or any other metric sites, people are always bashing Harleys. When I go on the Harley sites, they just talk about Harleys. They don't bash Nomads, Hondas or any other brands. I hope that I'm not offending anyone by this statement, but I own a Nomad and a Electra Glide. I enjoy both of them very much, two wheels in the wind, who cares what you ride.

One of the nice things about owning a motorcycle is that a person can choose how to engage and present. Some ride the wheels off and rack up the miles; others ride less and polish more; others seem to present with pretentious appearance, and to others, it may be a lifestyle with no pretense. I think that's really cool because it's your sport, hobby, fakeness, realness, and/or lifestyle. I draw the line at not being able to handle the machine well.
