Vaquero engine trouble?

So, my bike has started missing...and blowing what sounds like compressed air out of my Thunder Air Kit, I believe coming from the crank case vent...

Sometimes it happens when I pull the clutch lever in and shift...it is most noticeable when I am at high rpm, pull the clutch lever in or at low RPM when I attempt to rev the bike...but it happens on roll on, and decel...it doesn't happen every time I ride, but at least 50% of the time I ride it will happen at least once. Any thoughts? started in the mountains, I figured it was just altitude (was about 1000 ft higher than home) or something....but it keeps doing it...sometimes it takes two tries to get the bike started too.

it is a ptssssssssh sound...I found the crank case breather hose blown off of the nipple when I got back to texas...I put a little lock tite on the nipple, clipped about an inch off of the hose, and stuck it back on with a zip tie...it has been on there sturdy ever since.

Hmmm.... how about putting a new crankcase breather filter on it?

Look at the bottom of this page.....

It is connected to the Air Cleaner assy. via a vacuum hose

hose seems to be in decent shape, no kinks or holes...Travis with Thunder MFG told me he hadn't heard of that much pressure building up in the 1700s...but that it probably wasn't a huge deal...I think it could be a valve problem, or no problem at all...but the bike does miss when it happens, as if for just a second, it quit firing....

ok, checked your link, not a bad idea...but I shouldn't be having this trouble, if it is trouble/or have to do that work around ....

Are you sure it isn't an exhaust leak? The symptom sounds familiar.

an exhaust leak would produce more popping, and be more consistent. Some days it never happens.

So spoke with RACNRAY this morning. General concensus is that I may have vacuum leaks, or intake leaks...slight possability of some valve issues - but unlikely to be the case. There may be a seating issue due to the Thunder Air Kit only bolting to the throttle body instead of to the heads and the throttle body (but I am skepticle)

I am going to reassert myself in trying to get my PC V to respond, and get the map off of it. I have developed a little more decel pop that I had before, and may need to check the heads, and pipes for tightness...also will try to get ahold of the guy I met a few month's back that has a 100% stock Vaquero, same color, same year as mine...do some comparison...

Been trying to get hooked up with a guy that is an hour or so away from me that has a voyager...he wants to check out my mods, and I want to be there for the process of someone else modding thier 1700.

Should get the 205/60R16 92H General Altimax HP mounted this weekend

Correspondence with Travis from Thunder Mfg.

Trey,

I have from a few guys locally that are having that same sound and issue. I have had 3 of them on the Dyno here and we can not seem to get rid of it. I am not sure what is causing it. It seams to be there from the factory and just gets accentuated when installing the air and pipes. I believe the guys here have just gotten used to it because I haven't heard from them in a while. If I figure anything out I will let you know. The weight of the cleaner is OK on your manifold. It is secured with an o-ring type gasket but is very secure and rigid. If there was an air leak at the manifold you could try spraying with a bit of starting fluid around the seam and listening to the idle speed. If it increases there is a leak. The bracket bolts are supposed to be coated so they won't rust but it does happen from time to time. I will get you some new bolts out Monday. As for the vacuum hose, you can replace if you wish. Unless it looks real bad and is bothering you it would have to take a lot of cracking for it to effect anything. The Tornado will give you about 3 HP more on the top end. On the Dyno they will perform the same since the bike isn't actually moving and getting air rammed into the Tornado filter. Since the 1700 is an all inclusive kit you would need to get the entire Tornado air kit in order to swap them out.

Hey Travis,

It's your friend Trey in Texas!
I just wanted to touch base with you, I still have some psssst sound
on start up, and the same noise occasionally when riding hard...the
bike seems to miss when the noise happens... I plan on taking the air
cover off and trying to video whatever is coming out of either the
crank case breather or the throttle body itself. It has been brought
to my attention that the mount between the throttle body and the heads
is not a positive, bolt down thing, but more of a friction mount with
o-rings...do you think the weight of the air kit could cause vacuum
leaks or seating issues over time?

Still haven't done anything with the left side...stock cover has been
removed since getting back to Texas and finding the crank case
breather hose disconnected...and the breather hose looks like it is
starting to crack...should I replace with some high temp fuel line?

The bolts that hold the servo motor harness cover on are starting to
rust out on me, is that normal?

So far I have made the very good power compared to the guys on the
vulcanforums that have done the big 3 (pipes, air kit, fuel
controller) with the map I am sending you...I can't help but wonder if
I would have had more power with the tornado kit, is there a way to
swap the filter and cover for the tornado set up? would be a good
science experiment, having my base runs, to simply swap the filter,
and go run it again. just a thought...sorry for the book, just
wanted to give you an update of my experience.

Sincerely,

Trey Thedford

Ram air isn't a big deal unless you are going very fast, at least 100 mph. Cold(er) air is more productive under normal riding circumstances.
