Like I said a bad review for the Tom Tom before I even opened the box. I know Garmin are good.
Fish, did it take 9 months to get the mount or to find a place on your handlebars to mount it ??? ;)

I have been using the Zumo 550 for about 14 months now, great device. with the car mount, makes it easy to use in the truck as well as on the bike. Bluetooth, MP3 Player... its complete.

The price - well as someone said before me, sometimes you have to go for it...

I don't think vibration is going to be a killer on most of these. I didn't get mine on the mount quite right and it took a tumble at 20 mph. Picked it up and still runs. Mine is a Garmin Streetpilot 530.

The more I read about GPS the more confused I am about getting one. Maybe you alls can help me decide.

I'd like a widescreen version, like 4 or 4.5 "

voice navagation that has bluetooth capability for my scala rider or motorola earpiece

simple touch buttons (I'm a simpleton)

Simple instructions (see above!)

ease of mounting (ditto !)

MP3 player built in that can bluetooth to my helmet also

Quick gas station/restaurant/hotel lookup.

Traffic monitor (so i know what roads not to take)

Easily seeable in the sunlight. (old eyes syndrome)

This download stuff confuses me because I thought all the highways in the U.S. were already programmed into these units? Whats this download a map stuff?

Capable of intergrating to a CB unit like Trips if I mount one someday.

I saw one at Costco (not motorcycle specific) that had a "where am I" button! I'd need something like that unless they all have one built in for those "how in the f&ck did I end up here moments!" or "G damn it, I think I'm lost"

Why are some so much more expensive than others? What do the high end ones have that the $125 ones don't?

Having just navigated the sea of GPS units on the market, I can address some of your questions:

Traffic monitor (so i know what roads not to take)
Traffic info is usually an external service, as it's broadcast over FM radio frequencies. My unit requires an additional receiver/antenna to use the traffic feature. It is also a separate, usually one time, subscription for traffic info.

They are, but new roads are added all the time. A GPS contains maps of more than just highways. For example, the area where I live was farmland 5 years ago. My street wouldn't appear on a map older than 4-5 years. So regular updates are needed. You old guys and your irrational fear of newfangled contraptions amuse me. I'll bet you were scared of fire when it was first discovered.

Bluetooth, MP3 capability, built-in traffic receiver, all add to the cost over a basic unit.

If you want BT and MP3, here's a word of caution. Only BT equipment that says A2DP will get you stereo MP3s. The original Scala Rider's do not support A2DP and neither does the zumo 550. Most GPS's have a wired headset jack though.
Also, you don't have to download anything to the GPS, but most have a way to allow you to plan a route on your computer and download this to the GPS. On the computer it is much easier to force the roads you would want to take rather than letting the GPS plan your route.
There are also lots of online sources for additional points of interest (like Kawasaki dealers) that may not be in the database. I've even seen one that lists all the spots from Diners Drive-ins and Dives.
They also record where you've been and you can actually share the cool twisty roads that you found with others online.
