ATGATT or NOT?
Where do you fit in on the spectrum of safety apparel?

I'm all for safety . . . and moderation.
I like to have a drink with some friends, but I don't drink enough to get drunk. I usually wear safety gear, but only so much makes any sense. Motorcycle riding is dangerous. If you're that scared stay home or take a car. (BTW, accidental injury and/or death is still possible either way.) Wear enough "safety gear" around here in the summer, you're almost guaranteed a Heat Stroke. I almost always wear a helmet, rarely a full faced. I wear a leather jacket (not armored) till it hits 100+ degrees. I always wear long denim pants. Chaps and boots till it hits 100+. As soon as I am too scared to ride I'll sell the motorcycle.

Well I'm everybody's worst nightmare;
No helmet, shorts, t Shirt. I do wear tennis shoes but that's about it. My choice! And yes, if I ride the bike out to dinner I'll have one to two drinks with my meal. Other than that I don't drink at all! |

I wear a helmet...90% of the time.
I wear a jacket...if it's under 80 degrees or so. I never wear shorts and always wear boots and gloves.

♦ Full-Face Motorcycle Helmet Always, even in 100 degree weather.
♦ Full Motorcycle Gloves (Not half gloves) Always,even in 100 degree weather. ♦ Good Motorcycle Boots Always, even in 100 degree weather. ♦ A Good Quality Motorcycle Jacket with armor, either Leather or my mesh with armor depending on weather. ♦ Motorcycle Pants or Chaps (Ideally, with armor) Nope, but thinkin about trying some of those jeans with Kevlar. I'm not scared to ride, I am prepared to ride.

Summer pavement temperature in Arizona, 195 degrees. If a rider goes down, guaranteed burn therapy if not wearing protective clothing.
Out of general principals I wear all the gear. Full face helmet, jacket, riding pants, gloves, and boots. Just can't bring myself to ride without it. The outside of my gear is considerably hotter when it is over 100 than what I am feeling on the inside. Beats getting a severe sunburn and dehydrating faster. I have also been caught too many times on perfect sunny days when the weather changed. Having met too many riders who were chilled to the bone after getting wet, it is nice to be wearing the gear.

I wear all the gear all the time, as Tim says, not because I'm scared, I'm prepared. A buddy of mine has spent the last 2 weeks in and out of hospital with a severe concussion and can look forward to months of head aches etc.
All this because he decided to take a quick spin on his snowmobile to see how it was running with out a helmet. He high sided it and landed head first on the ice.

I always learn the hard way, but I am an official "convert" to ATTGATT. I've done it all - shorty helmet, no helmet, gear, no gear, sandals, running shoes. Then a close call with a moose in northern Washington put me into a full face helmet a few years ago. That was step #1 of recovery for me. Step #2 (and the final step) was a self inflicted loss of control low side inducing wreck with my '09 Nomad (RIP) with 55000kms on the summer of 2012. Riding with 3 girlfriends down in northeast Oregon, I overrode a twisty and away went the back tire. The bike rocketed away from me and sprung back after hitting the guardrail on the other side of the 2 lane highway and put the gear shift lever smartly through my shin. 3rd degree road rash from the middle of my back to my right baby finger tip, and nothing but a cherry on my right knee, not a scratch on my right hip. Amazing, really. I likely wouldn't have had a scratch (other than on my helmet) had I been wearing ALL of my gear. 100* in the shade that day, I had left my chaps, jacket and gloves in the saddlebag that morning. Had on my riding boots and my FF helmet - the results are in the photos I have attached. I don't judge anyone regarding their gear - each to their own. But, I learned that I personally don't like road rash and also that I'm damn lucky to be alive. It's not "IF", it's "WHEN" is what I figure.

Helmet = 100% 1/2 helmet (it served me well in my crash last May)
Pants = Jeans 100% (but considering other types) Chaps = 50% (but beginning to wear them more often) Shirt = 75% Long sleeve / 25% Short sleeve Jacket = 60% (not armored, but considering that); several varieties depending on temps. Eye Protection = 100% prescription sport glasses Boots = 100% high-top leather-tie boots with grip sole Gloves = 100% full-hand (especially after not having gloves in my crash. It hurts when your hands hit pavement without gloves. Deep cuts occur.)
