3rd gear

3rd gear is making a noise like a piece of paper stuck in a fan. There is no slipping in drive and no noise in any other gear. Havent put it up on the stand first, thought Id ask first

Sounds grim, but what are we talking about anyway? 1500? 1600?

3rd gear

This problem isn't anything I have ever heard of before in any standard tranny. I can't understand what and how you hear this in just 3rd..

I have seen bad syncros, bad counter shaft bearings, bad main shaft bearings, bad hi-vo chains, and bolts busted out holding thrust washers, but never came across anything like this before.

So far all I can suggest is drain the oil and filter it in a clean rag, to inspect what metalics are to be found.. If there is a lot of visible steel, you will need to go a lot deeper into the engine case to find the flaws. You may well find a lot of bronze looking materials too, suggesting fork and bushing wear.

The paperery noise is nothing I have heard of before.

Being just in 3rd sort of narrows things down though... There is a lot it can't be, as they would be shared in a more common way.

Are you sure its going into 3rd gear completely? The sound you describe is similar to when its between gears from not being clicked into the following gear crisply enough.

Have you had this bike since new? Has there ever been a missed shift into 3rd, and bad one?

I am just wondering if a gear tooth somehow became chipped?

Well, as i look in my chrystal ball you are not going to like many of these answers one bit.

If this is the case remember these words... It sucks to be you...

Don't go take that personal as i haven't any reason to slur you, but you are about to find out what case splitting is all about.

Do anything to prove me wrong. I want you to because i would rather be wrong than see anyone split a case, and wiorse find out that they were also wrong and nothing bad is in there..

If you do split the case do over the inner oil to water pump seal for kicks; if you didn't think to before.. Tear down the water pump too and do it's water /coolant seal anyway. Clean the are between the seals and grease it with a film to prevent air contact in the area.

Other than that get ready to drop coin and bitch... I would be!

Where in the world is Adelaide? is there any chance you can come by some other engine complete? What you are about to get into could take a while, and if you have a riding season like me, you are going to loose most of it.

If where ever you are happens to be in New Zealand you got time, but I jst have no idea where this is... Adelaide????

From his email address it looks like he may be in Australia. If you get a chance Mac look at my question of debaffling before installing digital fuel processor.
