When to shift

Being new to this forum and all I don't know if this has been discussed yet. Shift points, not having a tach and to wanting to spend the bucks on one right now. At what MPH are the shift points in each gear for max performance. From my years of drag racing I've got a good ear for what an engine sound like when it starts to nose over. Just thought some of you might like to share your wisdom. Be honest now, us green horns don't want to over rev and blow up our rides.

I am constantly surprised at having one or two gears left especially in town. These bikes have a lot of lungs that will get better with a few miles on them. In town most of the time I'm in 3rd gear. On the interstate, 75 in Idaho, the bike leaps forward in both 4th and 5th if I don't pay attention to my clutch work. Forget about revs and enjoy the ride. Just check once in a while to see if you have another gear that you did not think you needed. Idaho

I agree with those above. I came to the Nomad from a Concours, which red lined at 10,500 and became an asphalt ripping monster above 6,500 rpm. I was used to the power and acceleration being at the high end of the revs. Really caught me off guard the first time the rev limiter kicked in (first time I really tried out the acceleration after the break-in period). For a second I thought my engine had completely failed. Now I stay in the lower rev zone, enjoy the torque, and often check to make sure I am not cruising down the road in 4th.

OK, thanks guys, I guess I need to try out the rev limiter. I have felt the bike start to run out of usable revs before so I must have been close. I may take it to the strip on "street night" and play a little, every thing else I have has been down the track don't want the Nomad feeling left out ya know. It will give the kids a laugh... a fat guy on a bagger making a pass.

I took mine up to the limiter in 2nd gear. It kicks in around 70 mph in second.

I'd rethink that taking the Nomad to the track. That clutch is not a drag racer's thing of beauty.

142 wouldn't be fun on that bike! I don't think if you dropped in out of a plane it would fall to earth that fast!

2nd - 20+ MPH
3rd - 35 MPH
4th - 45 MPH
5th - 55-60 MPH

D*mn, I thought I was a fairly aggressive driver but my Nomad has never been to the Rev Limiter zone. No intention of getting there. I do push it a bit on interstate on ramps but that is short lived because the bkie sails past the speed limit in 3rd gear with no problem. At that point it is either back off or shoot past 100. That is not where I want to run the bike. Roll on throttle is a joy at highway speeds and liesurely rolling between stop lights in town puts me way ahead of traffic without exceeding the posted speed limit. Nice bikes.

I actually have only hit it once: In 2nd gear, freeway ramp, just after getting past break in. But as noted in my comment above, I had just come off a Concours, for which the rev limiter seemed to be the speed of light. Never found it on the Connie, and it just didn't occur to me for the Nomad until I hit it. Haven't done it since.

I've pushed my nomad hard several times and it pulls hard ( for a big bike) through 3rd gear. I don't like doing thatthough. These type of bikes were not meant to driven like that.
