Brake question - what is a "stopper spring"??

I'm replacing the brake pads on my 2006 VN1600 Nomad and noticed a little metal clip which mounts on a tab offset towards the caliper pistons. I checked an online Kawasaki diagram which calls it item #92144 or "Spring, Stopper". Does anyone know what this little clip does? I discovered it was rubbing on my right side front disc acting like a wear indicator.

Keeps the pad secure against the caliper when brakes are not engaged. Without it the pad moves around and rattles. They should be replaced if they came out on their own. They're probably broken or deteriorated from corrosion.
