Kentucky Bound

Hi All,

Well I am driving my daughter's car and my daughter from Washington State to Lousville KY at the end of April. She will be attending a 1yr Nursing program @ Bellarmine University.

We won't have time for much sightseeing but I thought we would take the slightly longer northern route so we could both see Mt. Rushmore for the first time. I hope to stay in Custer or somewhere near Mt. Rushmore. I would appreciate any input you may have for food/hotel/route as I know many of you made the trek to Custer last year.

This may sound kind of corny but I want to also surprise my daughter by stopping at the "Field of Dreams" in Iowa. My father, brother, sister's and even my mother had a special bond when playing "catch". Baseball was America's pastime in my early years and I am hoping playing a game of catch on the "Field of Dreams" will be a special memory for my daughter and I.

If anyone has any input on our trip I am all ears and would love to hear any recommendations you may have.

Thanks
Greg

Greg, We stayed at the Bavarian Inn. It's just 1 mile North of Custer on Hwy 16/385. There are several good BBQ places on the main drag in town. Great ice cream parlor too. I forget the name of it though. It's also right there on main street. The Field of Dreams sounds like a great idea. I'd like to do the same with my grandkids. Especially my 4 yr old grandson. He would love it as much as I would. Keep us posted while on your trip and be safe.

Mitch

I've stayed in Keystone. the town right before you get to Mt Rushmoore. its a nice little town with a lot of little shops. ice cream and some damn fine resturants. I do recommend getting ice cream form the parlor located at Mt Rushmoore. I believe its the best in the country. Rapid City is ok also. have stayed at the Motel 8 several times during Sturgis. The rooms are clean and the people are very nice and helpful if you need anything like directions or recommendations of resturants.

Have a great time Greg and drive safe! I totally understand the "field of dreams" thing. I'd do it too!

If you stay in Custer you will pass Crazy Horse on the way to Rushmore. Pay the 5 bucks and go into Crazy Horse if you have an hour.

Have a great ride, be safe and discover. I have used Super 8 Motels for years. They are reasonable and most will allow you to hold a room until 6PM without a credit card. So at least you have a room and if you have time you can scout out others.

Don't know if you have figured where you are stopping -- besides in Custer (we stayed at the Bavarian Inn for the rally).

If time would allow... it would be worth it to travel south on the Mississippi Great River Road along the Iowa / Missouri side (west side).

While it won't be the "Grand Canyon", it is still a great drive to take and you'll pass through a lot of small, historical river towns situated on the famous Mississippi River.

Then you can cross over the Southern tip of Illinois on 64 East (in the St. Louis area) all the way to Louisville, KY I believe. And I-64 provides some nice scenic areas as well on its way there.

If you stay in Custer the Cattleman's Restaurant serves a good steak. Hope you have time to at least drive down through the Needles. Of course it is more fun on the bike. But experiencing it with your daughter it won't matter bike or not. Have a great trip.

Hmmm....playing catch at the Field of Dreams with your daughter? Here's me recommendation.....WEAR A CUP.... !

There is a little place on the main drag in Custer that is bright purple. It is small....but very worth a stop for lunch or ice cream or whatever. Custer State Park is just down the road and if you have an extra hour or so....the ride through there is very cool to see the Buffalo roam. Mt. Rushmore is WAY cooler in person that it is in postcards.... ;).
