Heat shield removal

My Nomad 1600(2005)rear exhaust header pipe heat shield is rattling.I understand this is a common problem and I know about the fix.My question is how to remove it.I figured you could just pop it off but I want to be sure.Your advise will be appreciated.

If I'm not misunderstanding your question, there are hose clamps holding the shield in place. Sometimes the hose clamp will slip off of the "hooks" on the shield and they will rattle. And a very annoying rattle. I had to stop on the way home from Custer last year and tighten one up. It was driving me crazy.

I bet it is the top stock heat shield spot welded before they both have been chromed.

What is that fix you know? Best thing I can figure is to bust it off, then remove the inner cover, and deal with it that way in chrome hardware, that will show.

All you have to do is losen the hose clamp and slide it back over the hooks and retighten the clamp. job done .

I may have misunderstood. The upper heat shield fix is something about drilling out rivets and reinstalling steel or ss rivets.Does this sound familiar ?

The larger cover is clamped to the pipe. On a stock set up there is another cover on top of the first, much smaller, and so far as I know is spot welded. If this is correct there is no room for any rivet gun, or much else.

If this is the smaller cover a sort oof buffer for where a rider/pillion might contact the cover, I don't think there is any fix welding either, since that will ruin the chrome.

I am not sure anyone really knows what the problem is yet, since confimation is required to know.

I have no idea whats under the smaller cover, other than I have the idea it is welded.

It might be possible to rivet it I guess from inside the larger cover even if it was welded. The smaller cover would need a bracket we can't see to do that.

You will have to peek in under there and see if there is a weld, and or if there is a bracket, and then state what you see.

I don't run stock pipes anymore and haven't on my Nomad since June 06. memory is a tad foggy ya know.

I hope you can rivet. If you can drill the hole a little bigger than the rivet diameter, and use a flat washer on each end of the rivet to back the rivet up, and spread the load.

Update:
I repaired the heat shield.I discovered there was a inner heat shield held on with two hose clamps. The shield that was rattling was the small outer heat shield which is connected to the inner shield by two rivets.I drilled out the rivets and replaced them with bolts and nuts.I used red Loctite on the treads so it will never come loose or rattle again.
