Throttle Lock / Cruise Control

I've been looking for some sort of throttle lock or cruise control and really like the BreakAway unit but $199 is a bit rich. Any suggestions? Prefer only mechanical units. Thanks.

Ken, you might want to take a look at the old flip-a-lever. It's the most basic mechanical throttle lock I've seen and the easiest to install (unscrew 1 screw, attach, rescrew). They're on ebay for $60 shipped in the US ... not sure about international.

Ken, I bit the bullet and installed a BrakeAway less than a year after purchasing my '07. Works and looks first class, but you're right......they are proud of their product.

Ken. If you do get the less expensive mechanical lock thay do work ok. If you have not used one before train yourself to flick it off (as if it were on) each time you want to stope or slow down. Sort of like checking your turn signals after makeing a turn. I, just say this because I was back of a bike that went through a stop sign because the lock was new to him and he forgot he had it on. he said he dident even think of overrideing it. Stuff happens fast.

That's one of the reasons I purchased the BrakeAway. Safety, safety, safety.....

Danke Schön for all of the responses. Gotta think this one over. I like the safety features of the BreakAway, but like I said, $199 is a bit rich. On the other hand, flipping thru a red light or a stop sign due to forgetting to disengage the control could be damaging to the health of the rider. But again, thanks.

I got this one 2 years ago and works great.

How can someone go through a stop signs ??? Aren't you suppose to down shift to first gear while getting to a full stop ?

You would have the clutch in!

Meaning you would be in neutral and applying the brakes to stop.

At full stop, the proper way is right foot on brake, left foot on the ground, clutch in, transmission in first gear ready to proceed foward.
How could someone go through a stop ::) ::)

I replaced the "flip-a-lever" with the "Cruise-Mate". The threads stripped on the flip and the maker stopped selling it at the time. The "Cruise Mate" is very high quality made from stainless steel. Paid $65.00.

I have the Vista Cruise and it works well.I replace the adjusting nut with a brass lampshade nut and now I can adjust the nut by hand for fine tuning on the go.I found the sweet spot where I twist the throttle a little it disconnects.

The Brakeaway is for sure a bit spendy....but the safety feature of disabling it with either your thumb or a touch of the front brake sold me as well. It looks and works great...one of the best things I have put on my bike.

Had a flip-a-lever on my Nomad and have a trottlemeister on the ST. Both have worked very well. Slightly prefer the throttlemeister.

Throttle Lock / Cruise Control

I'm partial to the Vista Cruise, had one on the last eight bikes I've owned. The manufacturer was great in getting me a replacement part on one - no charge and they shipped to me no cost, now that's customer service.

Throttle Lock / Cruise Control

I have the Vista Cruz on this Nomad. I have had a Vista Cruz on every motorcycle I have owned since my 1973 MotoGuzzi Eldorado 850. Except the new 2010 Goldwing which has a full electronic cruise system just like my car.

The Vista Cruz is not a "throttle lock" . People describe it that way but all it does is use friction to overcome the throttle return spring so that the throttle controll can be set in an open position and then the hands pressure isn't required to maintain that postion. But the hand can still increase or decrease the throttle position while the assist is in place or it can release the vista cruz and the throttle return spring will close the throttle unless the hand takes over for the Vista Cruz.

Now (this is just my opinion so ...) to release my electronic cruise I have to push the button or turn the throttle down or touch the hand (or foot) brake. To release the vista cruz I have to push the button or turn the throttle down. The electronic cruise does have resume and accellerate and coast options but... If I want to accellerate or slow down with the Vista I just turn the throttle up or down a little then relax again. They seem to function about the same and require the same level of awareness.

In upwards of 400,000 miles over the last 40 years I never had it interfer with my operation of the bike. Course I seem to automatically remember to put the brakes on when I want to stop and pull the clutch in when needed and so on?
