I went to the tire store today cause of a screw in my truck tire. While waiting i had the manager look up some car tires for the nomad. They didn't have the size i want available. Heres where it gets interesting. He asked what the tire was for and when i said a M/C he said that was the most dangerous thing to do because the tire is a steel belted radial and could separate. I told him a lot of people are doing it with no problems and he said its just a matter of time before something bad happens. So i asked him if he had first hand knowledge of c/t coming apart on a bike and he said no it's just his opinion. Then he said about riding in a curve on the sidewall. I told him about delphi and darksiders website to get more info and he said it didn't matter because anyone with a c/t on a bike has a death wish. By now i'm a little warm because of his attitude so i told him he was ignorant on the subject and obviously didn't care about the facts. He ignored me the rest of the time i was there. So needless to say they lost a customer today!!

I've been real interested in a CT on my 99 Nomad.
I get a 50 / 50 pro and con about the same thing.
Until I get more info on it I'm just going to sit back and see what I can find out myself.

I pull a trailer, 2 up most of the time and it sure would be nice to find the correct answer....

And right there is the entire crux of his and many others ignorance.

They seem to think somehow that when you are in a curve and lean over that you're going to be on the sidewall.

Actually, a car going fast through a hard salaam course will roll the tires over onto the sidewall more than a motorcycle will ever come close to.

There is no way you can lean a cruiser over far enough that you will ever touch the sidewall. You will drag hard parts and crash long before you will ever even approach touching the sidewall.

Now, ignorance is not the same as stupidity. Ignorance is just the lack of knowledge about something. I don't fault anyone for being ignorant about a particular subject.

Stupidity is when someone tries to be an authority about something of which they are ignorant.

He simply has no basis to create any opinon from.. No one rides on his side wall either... Not even Dan Lund can do that if he has a ct on his bike. No can lean over that far to get the side wall on the ground with a Nomad.

The side wall on a radial is ment to roll under itself in the first place and still not touch the ground.

Walking the best way to say this is if you crossed over the feet like dancing, and you still don't fall down.

With a CT you gain not loose suface contact. For that you get better over all traction doing anything a tire does.

As to delaminating that one is sheer BS.. Once long ago almost every bike tire was square in profile, and we all just forgot. Go seach old bikes and look at their tires. Even the front tires were a square profile.

we all cross posted.

The 99' year should be able to take 195/60 R 16 and still have room for the hitch.

I thought the 1500's wheel was too narrow to take a car tire, again that's what some expert told this ignorant biker....-Rich

isaiahsdad, a member of KawaNOW has successfully installed a 195/60R-16 on his '99 1500. No problems reported.

The narrow rim pulls in the tire, so even though its a 195 width it fits because its gets squeezed on the narrow rim al little tighter.

Wompus, I pull a trailer and ride 2 up at least 90% of the time. I've only got a little over 200 miles on my CT but so far it's great. I have worked the pressure down from 42 psi to 34 with no ill effects. A couple of guys on the DS forum tell me that I will find my sweet spot at 20 - 30 psi. I'm going to hold at 34 a little longer and drop to 32 to see how the bike reacts. I will be pulling the trailer to Hot Springs, AR Friday morning. I'll let you know how it handles with the trailer when I return.

Get use to it. A lot of riders give me a hard time about my ct. I try to avoid talking about it because they are usually ignorant on the subject. If they insist to talk about it, I usually will just ask them why they don't use a ct. When they bring up common "issues" (squareness, size, rubber compound, etc) I use my personal experience to confound them. I cover a lot more ground than most people.

I have put 8K= miles on my Dunlop ct with NO issues since June. I drag floorboards on a regular bases and I never feel the tire slip or feel out of control in any way.

I wonder what brand of tire he found to work. My 'Nad is sitting in Valdez's garage (tire shop) with a rear flat now.

isaiahsdad, has the same rear tire I have and Cj has, the Dunlop Sport SP 5000 in 195/60 R 16..

I might has said ..."ONCE" the 1500 rim was too narrow myself, but if i did I was WRONG.

Going into the idea I was pretty cautious, untill I rememberd back in the 60's seeing older bikes and guys on them much older than me.

The bad thing is the rumor that this tire will be discontinued.. get one asap if you want one..

Sid if you have a place where you like to have your tires installed on your vehicles and like the business. I wouldn't go in there discussing religion, politics,or putting CTs on motorcycles. And if you know somebody who rides a Duccati don't discuss anything about bikes with them!
