If you cannot, then you are not a mammal...

I never went outside longer than it took to get in the car in that kind of weather.

I wish I was, I tweaked my back helping my son move to Seattle and haven't been able to ride. I've hardly been able to walk. It's slowly getting better, and I'll probably be riding in a week or so.

It was a -9 this morning with a wind chill of -24. Still is warmer than what we had a month ago. I just can't believe all the school closings east of here because of the cold. I don't ever remember school closing for cold growing up and we had some by far colder weather than what we are currently seeing.

By the way, the high for today is going to be 27 and warming the rest of the week. Just wish I was going to be here for that. Heading to Fargo tomorrow and I'll let you know what cold really feels like.

The MN Governor closed all of the schools in the state for today, probably will do the same for tomorrow.

I agree 100%

If you put a thermometer on a post in the middle of a field with no wind and the actual temp is 35F the thermometer will read 35F.
If you put a thermometer on a post in the middle of a field with a wind blowing 40 MPH the thermometer will still read 35F.
The only thing wind affects is things that it can remove heat from.
Therefore, if you keep your skin covered wind chill means nothing.

While wind chill is over used by the press these days to sensationalize it is a real thing and not just bare skin is effected. It's all about heat loss. Even well dressed you lose body heat through your winter parka, no wind that heat loss is slower and actually radiates off you helping to keep the air close around you warmer than the real outside temperature. Add wind and that same warm air is blown away making you lose heat at a faster rate af it was actually colder out. Heated building suffer the same fate. Wind blows that envelope of warm air from heat loss away and your furnanace will work harder as if the temperature was colder than it is.

I'm with TC on this one. Place a cup of water outside in 33F, (0C for you guys North of the border) have the wind blow 30 -40 - even 50 MPH and the water isn't going to freeze. Period. Wind chill calculation were originally developed by the military to set standards for Winter clothing. As TC said, wind chill means nothing to non-exposed skin.

As for weather forecasting, wind chill is just another tool to make weather "exciting & interesting". It's right up there with the Heat Index ("feels like temperature"). Just tell me what the "real" temperature is, humidity, if it's windy and if it's going to snow or rain. I'll take it from there. Rant over.

Dave, it's west of the Mississippi as well, eastern Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota are closed. Heck, even up in Fargo, ND they closed school and it's only -25 there. I've been up there when it was -35 and they didn't close school. Don't people know how to dress their kids for cold weather?

Welcome to the wussification of the U.S.
