My 06 has the whine at a certain speed - it sounds like a turbo - was there from new and hasn't changed in 70,000 km's. Probably same noise ring hears on his!

It may just be the pressure release valve on the fuel tank. They have an odd whistle to them when they release.

I know what you mean but in this case I don't think its that, it sounds like its coming more from the front of the motor, on the rh side. Also I'm have put about 3000 miles on the motor so far and I'm sure that the bevel gear would have gotten worse over time. The bike runs and feels fine, it just has a whine to it.

Since day one, mine has had a "whine" on decel, especially when going down a mountain. I assumed it was normal, have put around 50,000 miles on, and it still sounds exactly the same as it did when new.

That reminds me of one of my favourite quotes TC...

here's a link that shows what causes this whine.

I agree........

A whine in neutral just about has to be a fuel pump.

Any place else a whine is a liberal

Most likely it is the same sound, funny that nobody ever mentioned it prior to this. It seems to be mostly the 05/06's that make this sound.
I don't mind it at all, so I'll leave it alone.

Usually a whining sound comes from the back seat passenger. (Not you, my bride.....you're GREAT back there!)
