I don't even know if the light worked on my Nomad. I got down to a couple bars and I was looking for a gas station.

I misjudged the distance and was too picky to fill up at that crappy looking gas station. The result, I ran out of gas 4 miles away from Townsend, Montana. I never forget that.

I hardly go down to one bar on the fuel gauge, good for the fuel pump and relaxed riding from one gas station to the next.

I never use the auto-shut off, either.

I try to get gas as soon as the lite comes on.
IMO when you get very low on gas, you risk getting dirt/crud into carbs/injectors.
Speaking of which, How often should one clean/change fuel filter?

The fuel filter is supposed to last the life of the bike, according to the shop manual you don't ever have to change it unless you suspect a fuel problem.

For a 2008 Nomad, the fuel filter is an integral part of the fuel pump and no way to clean it or replace it unless you change the full assembly (I think it's around $450?)

Many members and myself use Sea Foam once or twice a season (depending on the miles ridden) and fuel conditioner before winterizing the bike. This simple procedure seems to keep the fuel filter in good condition.

i was on a ride when one of the riders FILLED their tank with diesel by accident. We found out before they tried to start the bike and promptly drained the tank. This was a carbed bike too. It did start once the right fuel was put in.

on the light issue for the fuel, i rode for about 40km with the needle below the "E" and was successfull in reaching a gas station

Yeah, I agree get OFF and Watch! I prefer to stand to the right of the bike because the cap is there and I don't have to lean so far to see.
