Paint removal

About a year ago I had some flames painted on my bike, now I no longer want them on the bike. Anybody know of a way I can remove the paint without damaging the paint on the bike?

Trade out the painted parts with someone who wants flames?

Is this one of those "gee, it seemed like a good idea at the time" kind of things? They would have to be sanded down and repainted, although Dan's solution is both clever and expedient.

Paint removal

I know back in the 80's I worked for a towing company. They built the rigs also so turned them over quite often. All the trucks were hand lettered. When they sold one they would use easy-off oven cleaner. Spray it on, wait a short time and wipe it and lettering off. Too long and the paint got damaged if I remember. They then would buff out the door and ship the truck. I never liked the idea but it worked enough to get the truck sold. I would be skeptical but it did work. But you asked.

About two years ago I bought a VN 800. It was turquoise and gray with lines and a skull with a cigar. I was going to sand it off but my friends begged me not to. After a while it grew on me. And then after a little longer while a deer ran out in front of me and totaled it.

It really depends on what type paint was used and how long it has been on it. Is it clear coated? More than likey you would need to sand it down and repaint.

My real point was is it so bad you just can't live with it? If it looks good to people you know, maybe it could lead to a bigger problem and money than it's worth to fool with. But we gotta do what makes us happy!

Keep an eye on eBay. If you have stock colors, one will eventually appear.

Like mentioned above. If the tank and flames are in good shape, you shouldn't have any trouble selling.

When I drove a dump truck years ago, the sign painter that used to letter the trucks recomended Easy Off oven cleaner to remove the lettering from the trucks. It softened the paint and you could wash it off without harming the original paint on the truck.
