Oil Leak

My friend has a '04 1600 Classic. Same engine as the Nomad.

She has developed a oil leak that is coming out of the boot that attaches the engine to the drive shaft. It has blown oil out and onto the frame of the bike and had a noticable oil stain on the driveway this a.m.

What could be causing this and is it real serious. She has 15,000 miles on the bike.

Oil Leak

is it engine oil or rear gear oil, sounds like the seal is leaking from the drive shaft, check your oil level if its up where its suppose to be its more than likely the gear oil, if its motor oil sounds like the rear gasket or boot is gone

Oil Leak

Gear oil smells a lot different too. From where you describing it's leaking from is the front seal on the drive shaft. Or....overfilling the diff oil could have started it to leak.

It's about the same color, but it smells much different. Fresh engine oil smells sweet. Old engine oil smells a bit like varnish. Gear oil has a kind of strong musky odor.

Oil Leak

I had the same problem once on my honda shadow. I would bet money that its the seal on the final drive. The oil runs down the shaft cover and leaks out at the boot. I took it to the dealer to fix and it wasn't very expensive (under 100 bucks if I recall)

That same thing happened to my bike, it was still under warranty shop changed seal in rear end and it stopped for 2 weeks then started leaking again, They changed seal again, 2 weeks later it leaked again. They then changed out rear end. That fixed it.

Oil Leak

Here's the link to that thread discussion. I put in my bill info on that one when that happened to me last summer. I didn't have time to get the part then have someone show me what to do to fix it. I had a time restraint. Hope the info you find here helps your friend.

Oil Leak

I went on a 240 mile ride yesterday, and today I noticed a few drops of gear oil leaking from the driveshaft boot again, after I just replaced the seal about 3 weeks ago.
