Cool Vest

I am not blasting the product but have a few questions.

Is it just freeze gel packs from a freezer or a dip in water type of vest?

While i dont see the justification for that price I am curious why it would be higher or better then say the gel types on the market.

I ask this because i used both while i was in Iraq. LOVE THEM, however they both had drawbacks. Partly due to wearing it under a ballistic vest but a variety of other factors like weight, sweating etc as the effect wore off.

If you have never used a cooling vest they are great products with a few drawbacks that most can live with.

I have a Power Trip Mojave armored mesh jacket that I wear during warmer months and wear leather in the winter. When it's really hot I just wear a long sleeve tshirt. I know that's not really safe.

The inserts are Phase Change Material. They are "charged" by either putting in the freezer for a couple of hours or putting in ice water for about 20 minutes. They last for app. 2 1/2 hours depending on conditions. Most other types use petroleum based products for the inserts, which can be harmful if it gets on your skin or is somehow ingested. Ours is all natural, labeled food grade by the FDA.

That does make a difference. One of the drawbacks i alluded to with a few of the vests i wore in Iraq is that if they got punctured you better get it off quick. This wasn't always easy running down the road in a convoy trying to tear off a vest to get to it. It was akin to getting blisters from a leaking zippo. NOT FUN.

Thanks for the follow up tj

We don't feel that our vest works "better" than other technologies, such as the evaporative type vests. Evaporative vests work well in high heat, low humidity conditions. In higher humidity conditions, the evaporative vest will lose their effectiveness because evaporation does not happen as quickly. The Cool Vest from Glacier Tek will work equally well in high or low humidity. Our vests do cost more, but there are trade offs for everything..

If I knew they lasted all day in 90+ degree heat they'd be something I'd consider. I'm usually out 6-8 hours on my summer rides...

There is a way that they can last all day. Most of our customers get a spare set of inserts. Charge them in ice water for 20 minutes and they are both ready to go. The spare set can be kept in a cooler, or wrapped in a towel with one of those ice blocks that are in plastic. when the first set becomes inefecctive change them out for the spare. Also some of our customers bring a small plasic bag, when they stop to gas up, eat etc. put the inserts in the bag with ice and water. 20 minutes and you are ready to go again. Not a "perfect" solution, but it works for some.

Sorry been off the forum for a few days vacationing with the grandkids. Sorry, it is just me that is not made of money; been making bi-weekly installments to FICA with my cash.
