I'm not retired.
I just have a lot of vacation time built up from my 44 years in the wire mill.

So how does this sound, arrive on a Sunday, that way people have all weekend to get there. Rally Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and leave on Thursday?

I would rather ride in the heat then in the rain, especially if there is a pool after the ride

Now! don't be shy and lets hear your thoughts.

;) Sounds good to me!

Loyd,
Camden Wire Company, now known as International Wire Camcen,NY division.
I stranded, re-spooled and tinned. Most of the 44 years were stranding though.
30 yrs in an 80" Hot Strip Mill you are tougher than I am. I hate the heat.

" Me Too"

I still remember those 90* day's when the Mill was Rolling Steel with water pouring on the Rolls to keep them from cracking and me having to repair an overhead Crane that had broken down over hot steel. I was an Electrician (Motor Inspector)
That Mill went from 10,000 in the 80's to about 75 people now.
The Blast Furnace, Coke Works, Open Hearth Furnaces, Wire Mills,Billit & Bar Mills, Blooming Mill, Slabbing Mill all gone, as well as most of the rest of the plant. :(

I'd be filthy dirty and soaking wet in 15 minutes.

::) Just Memories!

The plant I worked in is still going strong Loyd.
I guess I wasn't as important an employee as I thought.
My Dad took me to the mill where he worked in Rome NY once and showed me the rolling mill. Those guys would grab a red hot coil of 5" diameter copper with 3 foot long tongs coming out of a die down by the floor. Then turn in a half circle and stick the end in another die. The coil was probably 25 feet long and it would be running around their feet on the floor.
The bottom of their pant legs was burned off. ::) I told my Dad it didn't matter how much that job paid, I wasn't interested. He said he knew, he showed it to me so I would know not to.

I love retirement. ;)

Yep, those ole timers were some tough dudes.
I once visited Carpenter Steel in Reading Pa in the 80's and they still had a mill that was hand fed. I believe the steel they were rolling was only about 1.5" but still a tough job using tongs to feed it from one stand to the next. They were and still are a specialty steel maker. I miss the guy's I worked with but sure don't miss the mill. It still amazes me how fast the Steel Industry in this Country went down the tube. The Company's sold out to foreign labor and were rewarded with tax breaks. Thousands lost jobs but the Corp. continues to make big bucks. :(

I just cast my vote for mid-week, although my ability to make it will depend on whether or not the dates conflict with family plans.

Reading about you guys and your experiences in the mills gave me a flash back, I worked in a copper rod mill in South Carolina in my younger days. Even when it was 100 degress outside, it was so hot near the mill that we could still go outside to cool off. We didn't have to hand feed the mill, but when there was a cobble the snap-shears would dump what was in the mill stands onto the floor and we had to hook up the red hot copper with chains and drag it outside with fork-lifts. I burned many a pant leg on that job. Foundary work is a crazy business.

Steve, you would have to pay the Premium rate for a Fri. & Sat nite which can be from $20 to $35 a nite diff. and for the guy's with their wife's that can add up to a good sum. :'(
