Question on Caddman's air mod or woody's take on it ala vn1700

been looking at Caddman's air intake mode and was wondering if anyone has done this or wood's version to a vn1700.
I have seen where it can't be done, but isn't Thunder mfg version just a refined version?
Seems the only thing I would really have to do is fab my own back plate.

any thoughts?

Chuckster makes what you are looking for.

Do Chucksters kit on the intake side and leave the other side stock.
It looks the same on both sides.
Chucksters kit uses the stock cover and a 5" K&N filter on the right (intake side).

I'm not really wanting to retain the stock look.
I think the chuckster also uses an open filter option but the web site doesn't seem to work right

I don't know anyone that makes a kit for both sides of the 1700's to retain the symmetry look that you are after. You cant see both sides of the bike at the same time unless you are riding it so does it really matter :)

thanx redjay for replying to my thread ...
I can see both sides, and that's what counts

I have already abandoned the "kit" angle anyway.. I can't really afford stuff like that.
I know the left side is for looks alone in this case, but that's ok
I have the autocad skills and access to the equipment to fabricate anything I need, just looking to see if there is something I am not seeing, i.e. a reason you don't see too much in the way of these types of kits in the vn1700 arena

The 1500s and 1600s see these mods for already have a round base plate, and I thought fabricating a new base plate may be too much for a DIYer, till I saw the "woo" version of the caddman, he did just that... so my question is why not?

What is a "woo" version of a Caddman ? Never heard of that.

You can do a similar backplate to Chucksters to accommodate a mounting for a larger air filter but having seen and installed Chucksters kit I know how complicated a shape the back plate is to accommodate the mounting points for it.

The Caddman was a much simpler concept.

If you want to duplicate a similar design to Chucksters and have the ablilty to do it, go for it.

For me, buying Chucksters kit with the design work already done was the way to go.
He makes good stuff.

sorry I meant wood, or woody's http://www.gadgetjq.com/wood_intake.htm

I am sure he does, It's just comes down to what one can afford to do..

there are a lot of folks out there that figure if you can't pay X number of dollars for an accessory, then you shouldn't be allowed to breath the same air they do...
guys like the folks at chuckster or at thunder mfg, created a product, I am sure they aren't the first, and a market for that product followed, and I applaud that.

Then a guy comes along, in the middle of a mid western winter comes along and wonders, "can I do that on my budget?"

How could you afford the bike if you can't afford a $100 Intake ? If you have such great CAD and fab skills it shouldn't cost you much to make your own. I make my own stuff in my shop all the time. In fact I just made a version of the HD heavy breather intake for my 1600. I don't have much cost in it just time...

Well Dave I can't tell from behind the keyboard if you are trying to be funny, or your reading skills were lacking, or your just being a richard and proving my point about snobs.

making a pattern, and getting it to the plasma cam table is part of the day job, so not an issue.

whether there is a reason not to, or am I over looking something, is what I was asking.

100 dollar intake? really? don't think so... the Chuckster is 175, but is only half of what I am looking for, Thunder is twice that with the same limitation

Apologies Mark, Thought you were complaining about the price. We seem to have a lot of cheap bastards on here so I just assumed.

As far as 1700 Intakes , I've kicked around the idea to produce one for the 1700's . I think the one Chuckster makes is great if you want the stock look. But in my opinion, if you are going to do an aftermarket intake why not make something that looks nicer than the oem cover. I also don't like the look of just a round filter with a cover. That just screams cheesey to me. If you are really serious, send me a PM and I can machine anything you want. (For a price that is )

It's all good...

Kinda like the tapered cone like the wood intake.
I really cant start till I have a set of filters in hand,
now that winter is really setting in, I have the time
