2013 VBA National Rally... Pre-planning begins - Page 3

Glenwood Springs, right off of 70, goes through Glenwood Canyon, pretty much in the middle of the mountains so you can go any direction (ok, a little on the northern side). Montrose is good for the same reasons, but again a little far west in the mountains. Durango is always good, Walsenburg was fun when I stayed there YEARS ago! Pueblo is too damn populated to be fun...plus it is an hour to any good riding. Canon City might be an idea. Hope this helps...but it probably doesn't.

Where's Todd at? He has this way of negotiating that can only be described as "Verbal Panacea Art". He tastefully places the "MF's", and "F moab's" into such melody of course cords, it renders the unfortunate recipient surrendering in the fecal position.

I haven't been to CO in years, so I'll trust the committee's decision whatever it is, but in the little bit of Google-ing I just did. Gunnision, CO looks like a nice middle ground. Large enough to accommodate a group our size, and small enough to not be a hassle. (pop. 5900)
From the East, just 3 hours beyond Colorado Springs. It seems to be within reach of multiple "motorcycle" roads.

But that also depends on how much drive to a location is acceptable. We will have a larger group and probably need/want to stop a little more often for breaks and scenic stops. So we can't waste an inordinate amount of time getting to, and from, the good stuff.
But compared to the roads surrounding me in Illinois . . . It will ALL be Good Stuff!

Just my opinion, but I think we should avoid large cities like Colorado Springs or Pueblo. Traffic and safety being my two biggest concerns.

I wouldn't mind going back to Cortez for the national. Montrose or Gunnison are good suggestions, too. Durango would be nice, only IF we can find reasonable room rates.

I am with CJ - avoid larger cities/towns.

Also - at the SC Rally Trip said they were considering offering suggested rides/routes for day rides at the National and then letting individuals do there on thing at their own pace. I like that idea.

I sure hope for later dates of July or even August. I think we'll have a better chance of nicer weather. June can still be pretty iffy in different areas. I know people are going to say "it's always rain'in on the west coast" but June can be {and is this year} wet and cold. I doubt we've had many days with a higher temp of 20* C {68*F}
So I'd like to see July some time.

What is late enough? I was at monument lake in august one summer and it dropped down close to freezing at night.

I just rode up to Mt Evens, which is the highest paved road in north america. It seemed just fine in the middle of June. Rocky Mt NP is fine too.

I'm in Colorado for the summer and would be willing to check out any possible ride routes. :)
