Leak in Final Gear Area

I haven't ridden my Nomad in a week and a half.Rode about 250 miles, two up, in 100+ heat Saturday before last. Tonight, I noticed two oily spots close to the rear axle area. Upon inspection, I could see the leak is coming from around the bolt that bolts the bottom of the left shock to the Final Gear Case. The Final Gear oil was changed at 567 miles, and I have not had any problems at all, until now. I have about 7,800 miles on my Nomad at present. I am still in warranty. Should I take it to the dealer? Or should I try to tighten the bolt at the bottom of the left shock ? Any ideas ?

If its under warranty Id take it back and let them know, it shouldn't be leaking at all, especially under 8000 miles. It Could be a bad casing if it leaks from the lower shock bolt, or it could be only a seal, but one is easy to change and the other is a lot harder, since the complete assembly has to be opened up. Your best to let them do it this time.

I couldn't tell. It could be the shock. I only saw oil around the bolt, and a little above it. If it is the shock, should it be replaced ? It makes since that it could be the shock since we were two up all day.

Mine is at the dealer as we type having the pinion seal changed. My leak was coming from the rubber boot at the engine end of the drive shaft. All covered by warranty. My advise is if you have warranty, bring it to them.

I 'm going to take it to the dealer Friday. Can't go before then. I agree. Might as well take advantage of the warranty. Hope it doesn't take long.

It shouldn't be more than a 2-3 hour repair on the Final drive if thats what it is. Smell the oil to see if it is gear oil or not. If it is a leaking shock, its an easy job to replace it. However I doubt they will have stock on either part required.

Smells to me a bit like the old 3 in 1 oil

You are correct Ring. They didn't have any of the parts required to repair mine. The seal, o-ring, and coupling are supposed to arrive Wednesday and I should have my bike by Friday. They have had it since Tuesday evening of last week. It was Friday before they even looked at it. They aren't very swift with warranty work. I've been working so it's no big deal. If I would have been on days off I would have been a burr in their saddle every day.

Well it's a good thing I don't have any rides planned. Sounds like it probably will be a bit of a wait. My office isn't far from the dealership,so I can drop in frequently.
