"O" Ring for Oil Screen Plug

When I change oil on my 06 Nomad, I drain it by removing the plug for the oil screen. The Owner's Manual says to replace the "O" ring (Part #92055) on the screen plug with a new one. I haven't been doing this but decided it was time. The dealer didn't have one in stock but I did find out the dimensions: 35.2mm X 2.4mm. That converts pretty close to "One & 3/8in X 3/32in". So I went to my local Ace Hardware and found an exact replacement:

One & 9/16 (outside diameter) X One & 3/8 (inside diameter) X 3/32 (width).

Cost was 50 cents versus $4.37 at the dealer.

It's deplorable, while not surprising - that the dealer didn't have it in stock. Good job! I'm going to write those dimensions down and pick up a couple.

"O" Ring for Oil Screen Plug

Thanks Merc. I'll pick up a couple myself. Scott, that just shows that the dealership doesn't drain the oil from the screen or clean it for that matter. I caught my dealer when they swore they pulled the screen at the 600 mile oil change. I changed my oil at 3,500 miles and pulled the screen. It was full of gasket material and other trash. I gathered it all up and put it in a paper towel and brought it to the service manager. He's the one who said they pulled the screen at 600 miles. He didn't know what to say....I pulled it again as I do every time at 7,000 miles and it was as clean as can be and has been the same for every oil change since then. Why they lied I don't know. It's much easier to drain from the screen plug. Thanks again Merc.

That saved me a heart attack. The dealers still don't have a thing in stock... typical.

I sure am glad i am not a tech in a non stocking dealer. Life for them must suck. Open jobs all of the place waiting for a list of parts.

+1 again, thanks for the info. Although I've never replaced it, and this is where my oil always gets changed at, the original has lasted for at least 10 oil changes, I reckon I should go pick up a couple to keep around.

That size would be an industry standard size 126. What you'll get at the local hardware store will be a Buna-N material. A more high temp material is Viton, but you'll have to find a place that sells o-rings in quantity to get that.

I did a little searching on Buna-N (Nitrile) and found this statement:

"Due to its excellent resistance to petroleum products, and its ability to be compounded for service over a temperature range of -65 to + 275 degrees F (- 54 to +135 degrees C), Nitrile is the most widely used etastomer in the seal industry today."

It seems this would be adequate for our application. But if you think there could be a problem, please advise. Thanks.

Just 275 degrees, well that won't work on a Harley in Texas.

You're correct, the Buna-N o-ring will work in this application. I've just got in the habit over the years of using Viton if I can find it. It is a more high temp, durable material. Either will work fine.

I guess it all depends on how adept you are at trying to do it yourself. Its not difficult but there is a bunch of stuff to remove, I can do it in 3- 4 hours. Youll need a jack to get the bike up, and some basic tools. My 2002 uses a 17mm allen key to remove plug in the forks for the shock oil if your going to change that while you have the bike apart. I have to remove my fairing as well but its easy to take on and off.
