Kids and matches

A couple weeks ago my wife caught the kids next door smoking and throwing their cigarette butts over our fence. She bagged up the butts and took them next door to let the people know what was going on. This has happened several times in the past. Today the little delinquents finally managed to set their place on fire. My wife called me on my lunch hour, to come home. I managed to talk my way through the police barricade and this is what I found. Fortunately our property is untouched except for a little flying soot. Needless to say my wife freaked out totally. I've got her calmed down now, and I think I am too.

Yes, bless those firemen!

As for the kids learning anything, first the adults would have to learn something. No official cause of the fire has yet been stated, of course, but even if the kids turn out not to have been the cause, I can't say I'll be sorry to see them living somewhere else.

Man that's a real bummer. Glad that no one was hurt.
Hopefully, this will get through to the kids (if they were responsible for it) and they will straighten out.

Here's another photo of the fire in progress, shot by a local cameraman:

Maybe you'll get new neighbors out of it. At least they should be gone for a while.

Because you warned them about their kids smoking and leaving butts, and if it was the kids that were responsible for this fire......I'd chalk it up to Karma coming back to get them.

Glad it didn't damage yours.

Must have been a blood pressure spike getting up the block to see if yours was alright.

Could it be "Natural Selection" slowly working?

Thanks, Dan.

What I did not yet mention was that this was a "group home": a sort of half-way house for juveniles, with 24 hour supervision. (Of a sort.)

Frankly the councilors aren't much more civilized than the kids IMO, most of them probably being group home graduates themselves. There's been trouble on and off with the kids, the councilors, the company that operates it, and the people who lease the property to them.

So, anyway, anything to do with the place is a blood pressure spiking event, and this was no different. I was almost expecting it. I was not expecting my lovely lunch hour to turn this way though.

I was riding back from the Chipotle after a fine lunch of tacos and guacamole, in the right seat of my intern's hopped up Mach-1. We were bombing along nicely. It has Borla pipes, and so we don't even bother to turn on the radio. ;)

My phone rings and as I answer it the Borlas are pounding in one ear and my wife is screaming in the other, and all I can make out is something about the house burning down and how she saved all of the pets except one cat that ran back inside. It took several tries to get her to confirm that it was not our house that was burning down.

Yeah, I coulda gone for some Pepto about then, if not straight nitro pills.

Oh, yeah. The fire chief says the house is a total loss. $500,000 damages to house and contents.

That's my blue Pontiac on the right. It's parked in front of my house, which you can't quite see.

Amen on God bless the firefighters. I am not a professional firefighter but I am on the company Emergency Response Team. It requires training every year in mid summer. No one knows how hot that bunker gear is in the summertime until they don it. An interesting statistic about firefighters is that 90% of all firefighter deaths are the result of heart attack or stroke. Happy to hear that your property and wife survived what could have been much worse.

It's great that your house was unharmed. It's unfortunate that these things happen though, regardless of who is to blame.
