Lost my best friend today

My daughter took her 5 year old Boxer female to the vet today to have her spayed and also to remove a small lump on her neck. The spaying went fine but the lump was a cancerous tumor and she also had one around the base of her ear removed. From what the vet told her, most of the area around her ear had to be removed and the ear was stitched back on. Don't know what the prognosis is, cancer is common in the Boxer breed. I have a female from her first litter. Mine is nearly 3 years old now. I can't stand to think about burying either one of these beautiful and loving dogs.

Terrebonne, I hope everything turns out for the best with your daughters boxer. We inherited a boxer from our daughter who couldn't keep her. She hasn't been herself for the last 2 days.

Kawagirl, enjoy the time you have. You will know when it is time.

It is amazing how a pet can become a family member and it so difficult when they are gone.

Go online and google "Rainbow bridge" - it really helps me when this kind of thing happens.

We have 5 dogs, 2 cats, parrot, horse and donkey - regular zoo...

But in the last year, we lost 3 dogs and 2 cats - had to put them down. I cried and cried. It is the final act of love for a good friend.....
All of the remaining dogs are all geriatric dogs except for 1. I guess I'll be having to say goodbye many more times in the next few years.

You loved your "girl" and don't doubt for a minute she didn't know it. Unconditional love = dog
Bless you and your family.

Hollywood,

I have seen the Rainbow Bridge. In fact the vet sent a nice card with the Rainbow Bridge inserted into the card. He also sent a little heart shaped stone with a paw print in it. Here is another one that a friend sent me.

If I Should Grow Frail
-- by Julia Napier, copyright 1999

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain does keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done
For this - the last battle - can't be won.

You will be sad I understand
But don't let grief then stay your hand.
For on this day, more than the rest
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must now be you
Who has to decide this thing to do.
We've been so close - we two -these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

A small section of the tip of her ear had to be removed. Also, a mass was removed from under her neck. She is back home and doing well with the stitches on her ear, under her neck, and on her belly for the spaying. The pathological results have not come back for the mass removed from her neck yet but the cancer on her ear was stage 1 or 2. The vet feels very confident that the ear part is finished. If the neck mass is OK then all should be well. Thanks Joel and enjoy that Boxer. They are as loyal as they come and big clowns too. Take care.

Mitch

Lost my best friend today

I can relate to how all of you feel. A couple of years ago we had to put down our Daschund. She was a part of our lives for 8 years. Considering that me and my wife have no children , the dog was like a child to us. We tried to save her but her kidneys shut down and she was in lots of pain. I took her to the vet to have her put down , then I took her home and laid her to rest with her favorite blanket and toy. I have to say it was one of the most difficult things I have had to do it my life. We finally decided to get another dog recently. We are now the proud parents of a chocolate Cocker Spaniel.

Sorry to hear of your loss, it saddened me to read your story. I have buried many dogs dating back to the 50s. I now own Bingo my 10 year old Shetland Sheepdog. I don't know how many more years he has. Also have a mixed breed dog that is about 1 now. Got him to be Bingo's playmate.

Sorry to hear this waterman. Nothing other than the death of close family and friends is as painful as a pet.

Thanks for sharing this Waterman. Loosing a pet is very emotional and for a lot of us it's as tough as loosing a close family member. Rest assured our pets have a sole, because they are aware of much more than the electronic pets are aware of. Our pets love us, they protect us no matter what the threat, they accept a rub and pat from anybody, but they'd rather have it from their owner. Your dog is in the same heaven that I want to go to with my past dogs many years from now. :) I wish I had seen your post earlier. The memorial post are sad for me to read. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Waterman,...If I was writing this with pen and paper you'd see the tear stains. I'm so sorry to hear of your lost. Our pets are probably our best friends with their unconditional love for us. You did the best thing for your best friend.
Like some others here I am dreading the time when I have to make that decision for my best friend. He's twelve yrs.old with congestive heart failure.
My thoughts are with you pal.
