I would go with once a year or 7500 miles which ever comes first. That is a reasonable interval IMNSHO, and is what Kaw suggests on newer bikes. Can a syn go 10K, yea. But not going to happen on my bike.

I used synthetic in my nomad and changed every 4000 miles.

Just because a synthetic can go 18,000 before a oilchange, doesn't mean you should! Dust, dirt, blowby past the rings, crappy additives and water in the fuel....
I change mine at 6000, with new filter, no exceptions, no ifs ands or buts....

I change my Shell Rotella 15/40 non-synthetic and filter at 3,000 miles or before long trips. I probably don't need to but it's cheap preventative maintenance and it's a routine I have where I check over the bike at the same time. I have found other minor issues doing that and fix them so I don't have problems on the road.

Asking what interval between oil changes is like asking what oil to use :)

Very true. Starting and shutting off the engine causes condensation which causes acidic elements in the oil. It can't be filtered out. If I was going to go 7500 miles I would change the filter at 3500 miles. Use good filter like puralator
14610.

I change mine at 5000 or sooner using Mobil one 10w 40 with new filter.

I to use the Purolator filter. Keep in mind there are, at the moment, 4 different filters with the same number, Just a different prefix. Two have the same prefix and number as the packaging is being changed from the yellow box to the blue box.

At the time I was reading about the different filter manufacturers, the Purolator filter L14610 is an import with low quality associated with it. Smaller filter and less filter media. Less than $5.00. The box has red, white and blue colors.

The PL14610 filter is American made. About $7.00. The packaging has been changed and at the moment they are both on the shelf until the the yellow box packaging is depleted. The blue package box is the replacement. The internal components were better than most according to the inspection of the different filters from all the manufacturers surveyed.

There is another one I didn't know about until today, is a high milage filter: PBL14610. A little more than $11.00. The box is more black in color. I have not seen one of these filters cut open and inspected, yet.

The info on the side of the boxes give an indication of how long they rate the filters and the filtering capabilities.

Be it micron rating and media surface area.

Anyways, be careful of which filter you grab from the shelf.

The best oil is Rotella T-6 and the best change interval is 5,000 miles.

I don't know, I wouldn't mind hearing what I can choose from that will work well. I know how this subject goes on forums, but as a novice it would be helpful for me personally. My theory is that the conversation falls into a black hole because it's all fairly abstract: it's just a liquid and there's really no immediate cause and effect. You'd have to use it over years and I don't think many people would run tests with identical bikes and only varying the oil and nothing else. Anyway.

I'd just like to be able to stop buying the expensive stuff at the bike shop. I get it because as a beginner I'd rather pay the extra 20 or whatever it is than potentially use something terrible.
