Charlie's Continuing Adventure

I left Kanab last Friday in the company of Ross and his sister Marcia, and Teri and John. We rode up through Monument Valley into Durango CO. It was a hot ride but picturesque.

On Saturday Teri and John headed east toward Arkansas. The other 3 of us headed up over Hiway 550 into Silverton CO. By the time we hit Silverton the weather was closing in, coming down from 2 passes. We decided not to sight see and headed up 550 and were into rain immediately. I had been warned that corner speed signs were to be taken very seriously. On one of the first big right had curves marked 30 I was not paying close enough to the road. Might have been the weather. I didn't make the curve and slid across the opposite lane, coming to a stop on the shoulder, upright and wide eyed. From then on I paid a little closer attention to the road.

The rest of the day took us over a number of 10,000 passes, including the Continental Divide. In Buena Vista CO I parted ways with Ross and Marcia and for the first time in my trip continued on alone.

The last 130 miles passed easily enough and brought me here to Aurora CO and my little sisters house. It has been a relaxing 2 days of just hanging out. I cleaned the bike and did an oil change. Today we had dinner with my older brother and his family who are on the road in the process of moving from Texas to Washington.

Tomorrow I will be heading for home. It will probably be just a straight interstate shot to get me home in 2 or 2 1/2 days.

Thumbs Up On the road again

I left Denver this morning after a hearty breakfast at the Cracker Barrel.

Things went along just fine until I got into Wyoming and turned west on I-80. Almost immediatley I was hit with a high wind warning, gusts of 35 MPH +. For the next 358 miles I had head winds, side winds, up drafts, down drafts and I may have seen a young girl in a farm house go flying by.

The further west I rode the worse it got. At times I could only maitain 60 mph. I stopped at every Flying J I passed to fuel up. At the end of the day it turns out I averaged just 23 mpg.

I finally gave it up in Evanston, WY. The winds were getting even worse as evening approached. The temperature was dropping rapidly as well. So I pulled into the Holiday Inn Express and will pick it up in the morning.

On the way back from Custer, BD and I fought heavy winds all the way from Rawlins to Green River. It's always windy in southern Wyoming.

Charlie, take care in the wind. Many places always say "If you don't ride in the rain you don't ride". Well out here, "If you don't ride in the wind you don't ride."

It was 29 freaking degrees when I left the hotel this morning. Froze my ass till I got up toward Ogden Utah. After it warmed up it was just a whole lotta pavement with stops for gas. I had a late lunch at the Cracker Barrel in Boise then pressed on to Pendleton Oregon. 596 miles today with only 301 to go tomorrow. After 14 days on the road and about 4000 miles I will be home.

The last leg of the trip is probably the most important one, keep the rubber side down and enjoy!
