LOL....I think he was wishing he was warm is all.......it was in the low 40's most of the day today for us and I ain't lyin', that heated "pussy gear" kept my ass nice and toasty....

Yep, today was a workout. Kris looked like he wanted to turn left but he was just countering the wind.

And I am Ted "Theodore" Logan.
Quick trivia, the movie was not filmed in CA. It was filmed in Scottsdale and the school used is Coronado High School. I spent 9th and 10th grade there.

Hope Virginia City, NV is on your way to Ely. Also never pass a gas station on that road, I don't remember any gas station from Fallon to Austin.

We made it to Ely, Nevada about 5:00pm today. Left Susanville about 9:00 (bankers hours I know)...and blazed a trail through Reno before stopping for a late breakfast in Fallon, the start of the "Loneliest Road". I washed my bike all nice and clean before leaving, only to run over about 4 miles of wet roadway....just enough to screw up my nice wash job.... After a great breakfast and fuel, it was 111 miles to Austin, where we got our "been there, done that" Hwy 50 pins!!

The ride across Hwy 50 is epic in every way, and should be on your bucket list to do at least once. There is no preparing for the vastness of it...totally incredible open range you have to cross, mixed in with several mountain passes over 7000' in elevation. Ely here is at about 6400'.

The route generally follows the old Pony Express trail, but what we could cover in an hour would take them 3-4 days, and how they did not get lost is a freaking miracle. We stopped at an old 1861 Stagecoach stop...and I have no idea how people even found that place back then. All that is left is the old rock walls, surrounded by a chain link fence...hard to get a good feel for it.

Coming out of Austin there was still a little snow on the ground, but the beauty of the surroundings is hard to convey and pictures could not do it any justice, you just have to see it to believe it. Mountains that look like you could reach out and touch them are 40-50 miles away. You come over a rise and see the road as far as your eyes can see, and at 75 miles an hour, it takes like what seems an hour to cross it, only to see another just like it! Thankfully the weather was dry and although mostly sunny, it was still chilly enough to wear my "pussy gear".... Very little wind to speak of as well, which I would imagine can be brutal out there.

We were both spent by the time we hit Ely, but had a great dinner at the old historic Hotel Nevada ...very cool place. Sucking some refreshments as I type this......and looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. Here are some added pics from today, but our chances were limited at best...

Charlie and I awoke in Ely to a beautiful sunny morning....chilly, but a cloudless blue chip day. We left Ely heading south on Hwy 93, the "Great Basin Hwy". I thought that we had ridden the "Loneliest Road" yesterday...but I have to be honest...Hwy 93 was way lonelier, with a lot fewer cars and every bit as much wide open range as Hwy 50...!!

After miles of nothingness...we came into Pioche, NV for fuel and a nice breakfast at the Silver Cafe. Once we left there...it was a whole lot more nothingness until we came to Cedar City, UT, where we learned that Hwy 14 through Cedar Canyon was open for Memorial Weekend. There was a large landslide along there that had the road closed and repairs are ongoing...but it was open for travel for this weekend. It was a steep uphill climb to 9500' before crossing the summit to some stunning high meadows and a meandering 50 mph ride back down to Hwy 89.

Once we hit 89, it was downhill for about 50 miles or so to Kanab, where we rolled into the Bob-Bon Inn and lots of friends and Nomads. The owners BBQ'ed some great grub for us and the drinks and cigars were working their magic! Tomorrow we ride to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It should be epic for a northwesterner like me.... Hell...all of the last two days ride have been so.

We did our first group ride today, running about 84 miles (one way) to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. We got rolling about 9:00am and I have to say, the ride was completely different than what I had expected. Of course leaving Kanab heading south you have to run across some barren desert for a while, starting at about 4500' elevation. Soon though, you begin a steady climb into the Kaibab National Forest...very green and full of Aspen.

Once at Jacob Lake, you turn south onto Hwy 67, the road that runs into the Park. It's about 40 miles on that road to the Canyon Rim, but it is a stunning ride all the way. I expected some dry, arid ugliness going in there, but it was green forest and scenic green mountain meadows the entire way. If you did not know better, you would swear you were in the Black Hills of South Dakota! The road itself is newly paved and flawless to ride, a real pleasureable run all the way.

There is a large Visitors Center with many log rental cabins and of course the views are stunning. The immense canyon is beyond words and I'm sure the pictures won't do it justice either, but we spent several hours there taking it all in and enjoying lunch in the Grand Canyon Lodge.

As Ride Leader, Brad Langley (Blowndodge) was going to lead the group on a loop taking in another 140 or so miles, but a few of us decided to just head back to Kanab, me included. I wanted to enjoy the ride out of there in solitude, so I left solo, took my time and stopped to take some photos along the way before returning to the cool AC of my room to type out this report.
