saddlebag trim

OK folks......dumba** question for the day. Every now and then i scuff my rt. saddlebag with my big boot.

I like the look of chrome trim but i would love to find some that can be attached without drilling holes. My only 2 concerns is not being able to take them off if i drill and go stock and the chance (albeit small) of leaks.

Any thoughts? H-D has trim pieces that attach with adhesive.

I'm not a big fan of stick on. I would drill and put the good stuff on. The washers keep the water out if it is put on correctly. That is my plan in the near future.

For what is worth I would never remove mine and go back to stock, I find bikes with out them look bare after having them. Mine have never leaked but would be an easy fix if they did.

If you do decide to bolt them on the washers that come with them need to be replaced I used facet washers and the ones that come with them on the underside.

If your planning on installing the bag rails, you will have to drill holes in the box. Not a big deal, mine have never leaked.

True, as I suffered the oem rubber washer break up and couldn't get more. The rubbers tend to last around 9 months too, grim indeed.

Then you must adapt some other washer, I chose roofing screw washers which are thicker, but last apx 25 YEARS.

The thicker means the drill holes (hole) must move. In my case I used the first pair of holes, and moved the single.

That was on my stolen 01 1500.

When I did my 06 I threw out the rubbers and used roofing washers from the get go. I don't typically throw out stuff much either, but I threw those rubbers out not wanting to even give them away to friends. They are that bad.

Will you big boot now hit the Trim?

I solved this problem by using leather saddle bag chaps.

Just a thought.

I'd never tape them on. They too spendy to tape on. If you don't want to drill, you ought to get the bag chaps. Drilling and installing the top rails isn't difficult, but is permanent. Same thing goes with the chaps. On my first Nomad, I had the chaps and when I pulled them off after 10K miles, sand and grit had scuffed up the paint enough that I wouldn't want to run with them off anymore. They too were someone permanent imo.

I have the same chaps for my saddlebags too. For the same reason you're looking for something. No damage after 3 yrs. I make sure to re and re the chaps when I do the complete and thorough wash and wax. Which is fairly often. I'd have no problem removing the chaps and going stock. My hard bags are like new.

Rickyboy.....What brand chaps did you get? I'd like to look at that option as well.

I have no problem drilling necessarily, but having options is good.

Speaking of options, my smart son (who also rides) told me to get off my butt and work out more so I'm not so inflexible. what the heck does he know!!!! He's 21 and can run 10 miles a day. what till he has some mileage on him.

Thanks to everyone for the inputs.

Your son is partially right, when I first got my Nomad I had a tough time getting a leg over it the first couple weeks. Now I can clear that bike with tons of room to spare. You get used to it quickly.

I don't remember where I got mine. I have a hard time remembering what I had for breakfast today.
But the PH Customs ones look very similar. Mine are contoured to fit the bags perfectly.
