Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

Ok, guess the nap didn't work after all. I meant 16" tire. Although, I could become "Super Darkside" with a 60 on it...may affect the handling somewhat though.

Coach, here's a tire for you! This will probably take a few mods to get it to fit.

I could go for that! She'd look good with a SE Region patch somewhere on that top.

Can you believe I noticed the exposed chain? Guess I was looking at her shoes. I'd hate to get my pants leg hung up in it.

Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

I ran a car tire on my recently sold Valkyrie for years. I used a Goodyear Triple Tread 205/65/16. I had just put a new $225 Avon on the rear and flatted it with 500 miles on it. That motivated me to try the $120 car tire.

I had 10k miles on it when I sold the bike (as shown in the photo attached) and it showed almost no wear. Valk riders were typically getting mileage in the mid 20k to low 30k range out of the car tires.

I got best results from it running at around 30 - 33 lbs whereas I would run MC tires at 42+ on the rear. When I get my Nomad and when it needs a rear tire I will go back to the Darkside.

I wish I could do that on mine. I have done a bunch of research and it doesn't look like I'll be doing the DS mod on the '99. From what I have read, you have to do some work on the swing arm or change out the 1500 swing arm for a 1600 swing arm. In that process, you also have to change driveshaft and a couple other things. I guess it was not meant to be.

Car tire on motorcycles - an opinion

Ok guys, back on topic.

I checked the Ron Ayers fiche for the 2001 Classic, which has the same swing arm as the 1500G1 Nomad, again according to the fiche. On the DS tire information chart, there is a guy that put a 195/60-16 on his 2001 Classic.

Honest opinions on the chances of that tire working on my Nomad. I need to make a decision soon.

Ron, these are the generic dimensions of the 150/80-16 compared to the 195/60-16.

Specs for 150/80-16:

Sidewall Height: 4.72
Section Width: 5.91
Overall Diameter: 25.45

Specs for 195/60-16:

Sidewall Height: 4.61
Section Width: 7.68
Overall Diameter: 25.21

Notice that the only significant difference is in the section width. However, when you put the 195 on your 3.5" rim the sides are going to be pulled in a good bit.

Personally, I think it will fit.

When checking the tire availability in that size (195/60-16) I would purchase the tire that lists the narrowest section width.

Thanks Bob. I'm torn at this time. I may do a regular now and try the DS tire later. I know that seems stupid but I don't think I have time to break it in correctly and get used to it before going to Custer with the trailer.
