In my 20's I would occasionally tackle 1,000 mile day but never did it twice in a row. Now I'm in the 50's so I max out at about 500 and prefer 350-400.

The longest I have done is 762 miles. Never again. I'd rather take a couple more days off from work and take my time.

What does your route look like? Are you going to stay in the northern part of the country or make your way south? Looks like there are several different options for you.

Sorry, I don't have any tips for you other than one of the big ones... wear sunscreen.

Keep in mind that several factors to a 1k day no longer apply. (youth, stamina, cheep fuel, nothing else to do, yellow jackets, black beauty's)

Well, I am 49 and I had nothing but what is between my ear to keep me going.

We are only 5 years apart, but perhaps from opposite sides of the "track"?

I wasn't from any side of the track. I was lucky enough to go to parochial school until the 8th grade and I had parents that asked a lot of questions, both of which kept me out of trouble.

I am also planning a long trip for next year, Philadelphia area to Oshkosh WI for EAA AirVenture at the end of July. These tips and posts are very helpful. Today, I actually looked at two 500 mile days to get there, but then three days of more relaxed routes home.

Anyone have tips on road maintenance or agencies to belong to for these long trips? My auto insurance offers towing and service, but I was thinking of making a list of Kawi dealers/shops along the route if something should happen.

It's lucky by comparison . . . I can't blame any of my blood family or their actions for anything good in my life. I found Grace after a lot of bad things happened first.

I drink lots of water on a trip and like Caper, keep a water bottle handy. I went down to Maggie Valley wearing an open face helmet and returned using a full face. Big difference, riding long distances using a full face helmet is much less tiring than an open face.

Lots of ice in a "camel back" on a summer ride is nice until the pit stops catch up. If you have risers on a stock Nomad, a small piece of "Armorflex" foam pipe insulation on your handlebars makes a nice water bottle pocket next to the windshield.

Get a AAA card....but get the RV Plus plan. That is the plan that includes motorcycle towing and pickup....the regular plan is for cages. Seriously, don't leave home without it. They give you free maps, bring you gas if you need it....all kinds of stuff.

BTW....you ride a Kawi....you won't need a list of Dealerships or repair shops. CJ and glwilson on the other hand, they don't leave home without a four page list of dealerships and phone numbers..."just in case"..... Damn...I almost forgot...glwilson usually brings his own trailer, so he's covered.....
