Measuring Calipers

I've always noticed I needed to know a bolt size, hole size, bar size, etc, etc. Well I went to Sears and found a inexpensive($10) veneer calipers all metal that measures outside, inside and depth. measures in metric and sae. very well made and works great. the only thing it won't give you is the pitch. i know alot of you guys have asked the same questions on sizing. FYI

Thanks Doc. Now I have another reason to go to Sears. Reason number one was to look at mowers.

Who needs a "reason" to go to Sears? Craftsman, baby! That's the only reason I need.

Measuring Calipers

Doc,
If you look around at Sears, some stores sell a little goober called a " Thread pitch gauge" either metric or standard. They are not very expensive and makes a great addition to your tools. Looks sort of like a thickness gauge ( feeler gauge) with teeth. Normally I can look at a standard bolt and tell its size and pitch but I can't do that with the metrics. You can also order from places like MSC direct.

I can look at a standard (SAE) bolt and tell the size, etc. This new fangled metric crap is not so easy.

I remember in grade school, back in the 60's they beat the metric system into us because the USA was going to go to the metric system in 1975 or something. Never happened. I think the rest of the world should convert to SAE. I think it was a conspiracy by Sears, Snap On and MAC to sell more tools.

Canada switched to the metric system in 1977 and I hate it to this day. I never know the right temperature, what size wrench to grab, how much things weigh etc, unless I spend a minute to recalculate the figures back the way it should be.
