Backfiring
Right side biggest rubber tube... behind the throttle plate backing cover, which looks like a air filter dog bowl.. Gadjet has all sorts of detail. If you don't have his pages sing right out.. This prevent the reed valves from getting air, to by pass on to the exhaust.
That whole idea is to burn waste gasses up more, which adds heat wicked bad.. It does nothing for GO... If you are going to get washers, you might well get stainless acorns.. 8mmx 1.25 pitch std metric course thread. The cheap chrome burns off the acorns fast.. Another thing is the studs become rusted and white, and to my eye butt ugly, so I cleaned mine, and misted hi temp flat black into a trash cup and used a acid brush to paint the studs. Then I added a dob of anti seize to the starter threads on each stud. I just hate payin the piper to get a seized acorn nut off a stud, if i can prevent it, and on my bike I can prevent it. Then I can on anyone elses for hire. When all else fails, folks bring me their butchery..

You can use Harley crush gaskets instead of Kawi gaskets, they are available at most HD dealers.

Also I found that the pipe flange on the V & H are not as thick as the stock flanges. Install a flat washers under the flange nuts and retorque them. The Cap nuts are most likely bottomed out and the flanges are not tight enough. And do the marble!

beez I have the same set up as you do. if I really push it hard between gears I will also get that shotgun pop. if you drive it easy you wont. try the marble trick, it stops it, plus it stops alot of the decleartion popping. I dont have any leaks and i am betting you don't either. Good Luck
Update: With TFI I now dont get the shotgun backfire. Login or Register to Remove Ads |

I went with the V&H Baggers and a cobra Fi2000r. Had alot of backfiring as well when shifting and/or decelerating. Did not have an air intake mod at the time, so after all these posts and threads, I installed the Cadd air intake kit on boths sides and it totally elminated the backfiring.
If you want to hear something really sweet, open up your air intake, both sides and take out your V&H baffles, that is, if you like loud sound. |

I was having backfiring problems which ended up being an exhaust gasket leak. I couldn't find any oem or HD gaskets. I found that exhaust gaskets for a Toyota 1969-1995 will work, but I had to work on the OD A little. They are a thick fiber gasket, which I like better than the metal crush type and they work great and are reusable. The Part no. is Fel pro 23588 cost $3.25 each
