Motorcycle death trial -UPDATED

Some of you may remember the accident that happened in Phoenix in March, 2010. A group of bikers were stopped at a red light when a large flatbed truck plowed into the group. Four people died and several suffered very serious injuries.

The first trial ended in a mistrial, so the driver is being tried a second time. Hopefully, he will be going away for a very long time.

Looks like they almost aquitted him the first time (9-3 to aquit). Thank God for the three that wouldn't have it.

Scott, is this guy's last name pronounced "Jack-Shit" (Jakscht)????

I don't know something fishy about his defense. One the one hand his lawyer would have you believe he was operating the truck responsibly for several hours with tricky maneuvers before the incident, then his brakes fail when he slams them onto avoid hitting the bikers?
One: you don't need to slam on your brakes if you are paying attention to the road ahead and that everyone is stopped. Two: If air brakes are anything like hydraulic brakes, a complete brake failure is rare, and there should be evidence that they did fail completely and that he did attempt to brake. His claim that the truck swerved into their lane when the brakes failed suggest to me only one or 2 wheels would have had brakes and that should leave marks on the road. Just my opinion.

I don't know how to pronounce his last name. "Inmate" would seem appropriate.

This BS about his brakes failing and diet pills is just crap. He admitted after the crash he was reading paperwork and not watching what was in front of him.

They had the closing arguments today and now the trial is in the hands of the jury. I hope this guy doesn't go free.

I hope he doesn't get off, but the bleeding heart society has deep
routes in this country.

When I drove an 18 wheeler and they all had air brakes. If you had a failure the brakes would lock up. Just saying. I don't think there was an air brake failure.

I don't either, Gene. Witnesses said the truck made no effort to stop and no effort to avoid the collision. The driver wasn't paying attention, for whatever reason.

I agree with AlabamaNomadRider,
I spent my formative years in my dad's truck stop. When the air line fails the brakes lock period, then its hang on until stop or hit something depending on the speed to start with.

All air brakes are designed that way since George Westinghouse designed them for trains in 1869. This guy either did it with malice aforethought or was negligent. Either way, other people died as a result of his actions or inaction and he should pay the price for that.

Air brakes are basically backwards, the line pressure takes pressure off the brake pads. So pedal up is high line pressure and pedal down bleeds pressure the farther you go. No pressure in the lines is full lock. It's really rare to see a failure at all much less one so catastrophic as to allow freewheeling.

Yup. The shoes would have to be gone to have no brakes unless he was riding them. They get hot and fade BAD!!! That's why they have escape ramps on big downhills. No, wait. Those are for regular cars to park RIGHT IN FRONT OF! "Hey, honey. This seems like a nice spot to have a picnic.". Idiots.
