Mufflers and Heat shields

I'm wanting to upgrade my mufflers. I want to put some fishtails on, but I'm worried about how they'll fit with the stock heat shields. I know that there are some made specifically for the vaquero(cobra, v&h), but none of them offer fishtails. Has anybody tried any "universal" fit mufflers and how well do they line up? Thanks in advance guys
