NE-Indiana: 2001 Nomad Fi

First I want to THANK EVERYONE that posts/responds to this forum. This is my #1 resource for researching everything for my new bike. This has been my evening reading material for the past week, and I am sure for weeks to come. I purchased my bike a week ago today and since I live in Northeastern Indiana haven’t done any riding yet. All we have had here is rain and cold temperatures. My previous bike was a 1994 Honda CB1000 that I love, but it was time to let it go to a more family friendly bike if that’s possible.

Today I was going through the bike figuring out where everything is (battery, coolant bottle, tool kit, etc) and found out I have the dreaded “Dex-Cool” coolant in it from the previous owner. Luckily he kept good records and it’s only been in there for 1,700 miles so I hope it didn’t do any damage. I personally don’t like the stuff in my GM cars let alone in my bike.

One question I haven’t found an answer for is: Is there anything major (ie ’99 oil pump gear) that I need to know about my 2001 Nomad Fi? Anything I need to keep an eye on or something everyone has to do sooner or later other than the regular maintenance?

Thanks for all the guidance and help!

....Congrats on your new bike. The one thing you gotta do, and we all do it, is add some chrome and gadgets!

Seriously though, these bikes are quite bulletproof. But there are a few things to watch. You didn't mention how many miles on the clock. Cam chain tensionners may have to have extenders put on. Mileage for this varies but around 30,000 (give or take) and they could require attention. You can find lots of info on here if you do a search. Clutch springs are also an item that many of us have had to do. Swingarm, driveshaft and steering head bearings are things to keep in mind as maintenance items. Other than that, I have put on 30,000 miles on mine so far and have been trouble free for the most part.

Enjoy your new ride when the weather starts to co-operate!!!

Mike
