Zion N.P.

Heading for Bryce Canyon N.P. in a couple weeks and want to pass through Zion N.P on the way. I've heard and read that the road through Zion has been under construction all summer and should be complete by the end of October.

Does anyone know how much gravel is left to be turned into blacktop?

Maybe UtahMotorcyclist will be able to help if he sees this. I think that is in his part of the country. I'm so far away I don't have a clue.

Here's a link to the ZNP website:

http://www.nps.gov/zion/parknews/zio...n-schedule.htm

If you choose not to deal with Zion and depending on the weather, take Hwy 14 in Cedar City which will take you past Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument, Navajo Lake, and Duck Creek. You will hit Hwy 89 about 40 miles E of Cedar City at Long Valley Jct. Then you're only 27 miles from Panguitch, which is close to Bryce.

Beware, it will be cold in Bryce and quite possibly snowy that late in October, Bryce is 8,000'-9,000'.

Probably my favorite part of my trip west last June. The nat'l parks of Utah and surrounding areas, and the western parts of CO.

Every couple of minutes you could take another photo.

All right. Maybe that whole area of the country is just gorgeous.

We don't have anything like that in the NE. Could we move some high altitude desert to the NE just for variation? I'll trade some of Mac's NH white mountains.

Thanks for the info CJ but that was supposed to be our return trip. As far as snow there is only a slim chance of that and if it gets crappy we will detour to an area with lower elevations.

Just had enough heat with the extended Summer we've had. I can take the heat when it's supposed to be hot. But when it's supposed to be cooling off and it isn't I don't even feel like riding the bike. Somehow 100 degree temps in October are hotter than 110 degree temps in July. I know it's all in my head, but that's just the way it is.

So a little hiking in 50 degree weather really sounds good. I still have Northern Illinois blood in me and consider 40-60 degree Temps. crisp and fresh.

I hear you with the extended summer thing. We tied a record yesterday at 107°. It's supposed to stay hot here until the middle of next week, then it's supposed to cool down. I can't wait, this has been a long, hot summer in Phoenix.

I'd wait until you are closer to your departure and call the office at Zion and inquire about the road construction conditions.
