While attending the South Central get together in Antlers OK this weekend I experienced a total failure of my rear tire. I didn't notice it being low when we returned from our group ride and went ahead off to dinner with the gang. As I was pushing back from the restaurant parking, I noticed it seemed to be a bit harder to push but I thought it was probably the clutch not actuating fully. Ann got on and as we turned left out of the restaurant parking, the rear end went absolutely squirrelly. We pulled over into a gas station parking lot to check things out. I checked the tire pressure and saw 0. We wheeled over to the air compressor and the tire held at least for a while.

Bill Mac stopped to see what was wrong and at first offered to help plug it. Unfortunately, there were a few spots worn down to the steel belts. When we saw that, Bill and his wife Cheryl went back to the hotel, picked up their trailer and loaded my limping bike on to the trailer and carted it back to the hotel and then on to the dealer in the morning who unbelieveably actually had a tire (OEM). Bill had also offered to take me to Paris, TX (a larger town) if the local dealer didn't have a tire.

I feel incredibly fortunate that I did not experience this (my first flat on a motorcycle) on our ride in the twists and turns of the Talimena Drive or one of the other teriffic back roads at 50 MPH. I wanted to publicly acknowledge Bill and Cheryl. They represent the "Nomadradrey" that Trip talks about here on the forum and at the rallies I have attended. I would also like to say thanks to the other attendees that are far more knowledgable and mechanically inclined than I who offered to help.

Glenn, Bill and others here are always ready to help someone in need. That's what makes this forum as great as it is. And we all know that if the shoe would have been on the other foot, you would have done the same.

Check your tires before you leave home next time. ;)

Thanks for acknowledging Billmac's efforts in assisting you.

There are some great guys and gals on the forum. I feel that anyone on here would offer their assistance if they could. It is a good thing you lost the air when you did. Better to lose it gradually than to have had a blown tire. That could have been devastating with 2 up. You will have to start checking those tires Pete. If the air gets low it doesn't take long to wear the tire down to the steel belts. I have seen examples of that. Glad everything worked out the way it did.

Guys, I checked the tire before leaving home. It was fine. I must have picked up something on the road. I will definitely be paying more attention especially if I find it difficult to push back from a stop. I shared this for two reasons. One to acknowledge what a terrific group we have here and two because there may be others like me who just don't know what to watch for. I"ve only been riding for a few years and I am always in learning mode.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. We were glad we were able to provide assistance.

Like Glenn, I checked my tire pressure before I left home. Honestly, I don't lay on the ground each morning before the rides, just to lose more air checking the tires. Clearly Glenn's Nomad ran over something that punctured his tire. It could have happen to any of us.

Glenn and Ann are nice folks who we look forward to seeing at the South Central Rally events. We truly enjoy their company.
