J&M CB Units

I am looking at the JMB 2003 CB for my 2010 Nomad. Does anyone have expereince with this unit. A group of us are planning a 4,000 mile trip this summer and are considering using this for group communication.

We like the weather feature and being able to pick up on traffic info from truckers etc. Is our thinking ok?

Don't mean to jump into another regions business, but I have J&M on both my bikes. They are good units for communicating between multiple bikes and the weather deal is nice. Pricey but nice to have.

Northeast USA and Canada East share a regional rally so I figure I can jump in here.
Question on CB. I had one in my truck back in the day.
Do you bluetooth it into your helmet or just turn the volume way up to hear on the bikes?
Is it voice activated and if so, only one person can talk at a time correct?
This means there will be a lot of keying on each other and blocked transmissions.
Radio transmissions not bike transmissions.

If I may.....I don't think the CB is a bad idea but like TC said, only one can talk at a time I think. Wouldn't you be keying over everyone if you wanted to chime in? I know they have their limitations too but have you thought of the SENA headset. Considerably cheaper I think, and you can talk with up to three riders at the same time {conference} And depending on your GPS you can get traffic reports from it. There might be a cost for that service though. Just my H.O..

Thanks for the insights. I will hard wire it to my Nolan 43 full helmet. But good points about keying; back in the day I had CB's in my cars and trucks and remember the problems then. We would likely select a channel for ourselves to keep our group organized, together and informed.

Certainly some food for thought and I will share with the guys and girls...

Scott, Gene, I and others used a CB on our ride to Coos Bay and we didn't have any cross-talking and communication was fine, but then we don't yack up a storm like Tim would!!!

I just scored one on ebay the other day. Haven't gotten it yet. There has been factory option CBs on nomads. Really slick setups in appearance don’t know anyone with one, they cost…

I come from the off road world and a CB radio is really not optional. Many clubs flat out require one. I think many think of conversation which is fine, but you can also disseminate emergency info quickly.

One chatty Kathy can screw it all up too.

FRS and GMRS are also single duplex standards in the US. They also support encrypted communications and data locate the other radio. GMRS requires a license in the US, dunno if a Canadian can get one. Dunno if you could bring it back to Canada.

All of the previous support basically unlimited users.

If you want most likely for another guy to have, CB is probably the way to go.

I have a Bluetooth system as well, nowhere near the range of CB or GMRS but full duplex. Limited to 2 users. I plan to try connecting the J&M to my current Bluetooth headset through a Bluetooth adapter. This would allow for a wireless helmet, super long range cellular and CB, plus a full duplex intercom.

If you get weather then I suggest extra shorts, the first time you hear a US weather alert or test of the emergency broadcast system you may chit yourself depending on the volume level.
