Got this photo of my pops. He's sitting on his 49 Harley panhead when he was 19. Not sure but I think it was around 1952 or so. Love the old motorcycle photos and just thought I'd toss it up. My pops is turning 80 and still riding. He's been riding all these years, but hasn't owned a Harley since this one. He's on a Kawasaki Vulcan now. He talks about selling his current bike, but I don't know if he can do it.

Anyway. Like I said, just thought I'd put up the photo. My pops is and always will be my hero.

He started me riding when I was about 7. Conversation went something like this.

Me: Hey Pop. Some of the kids in the neighborhood are getting minibikes.

Pop: Minibikes? If you want to ride, you're going to ride a real motorcycle.

He takes me out to the school yard beside our house and puts me on the bike he had at the time. I couldn't reach the footpegs much less the ground so he puts it in 2nd gear, runs along side and gives me a shove to get me going.

I'd ride around till my hands went numb or the bike started sputtering and was about to run out of gas at which time I'd honk the horn and he'd come out to catch me so I wouldn't fall (most of the time). Then I learned if I got along side the backstop for the baseball field, I could position myself in such a way that I could kill the motor and lean it up against the fence and climb off.

Oh the good old days.

Unfortunately we live on different sides of the country now. He's in Michigan and I'm in Arizona. Some 1800 miles of terra firma between us. We did ride together while I was still living in and around his area though.

Love the old photos of old bikes and "bikers"... especially when there is a story behind it.

Given it was the early 1950's and he is on motorcycle... he was one of the rare-breed back then... ;)
