I have been working on my carb because the float valve had a bit of trash and kept overfowing. i took it to a dealer twice and he put a needle valve new jet and so onIt would run a few days and then do it again. So I took it to a different place and a few days later it did it again. So I have been doing the work myself. Finally I got it running ok but in the morning you have to choke it forever and ride 3 or 4 miles and then it does good. I thougth it was a little lean and turned mixture screw out a little and the throttle was (hanging) like it was to lean. So I put the screw 1 and a half turns out and it runs fine but is hard to warm up. Does anyone have a cold natured bike also Any suggestions? thanks Any more turns out and it runs bad

You need a inline fuel filter. In winter you should spend some time cleaning that tank out too.

The carbed 1500s had a stock filter between the pump and the fuel tank.

Mine is a little cold natured but I have never turned a screw on it. I did replace the filter and ran a can of seafoam through it. I usually pull the choke out all the way to crank it then move in in slightly. It goes back in the rest of the way on it's on when it's ready (I guess from vibration). I hardly ever have to push it back in by hand.

Then it is no good at this point. Bits of crud should never get tangeld up in the inlet valve. If the filter is good a known good, then the lines from it are sayin' bye bye' which can happen too.

That sort of depends on what the crud is.

Black specs tend to be fuel line tubing breaking down, due to age.
Brown specs tend to be tank rust.
White specs tend to be from oxidized fuel that has gone to a chrystal state.
Green and or brown goo is fuel well past stale that hasn't dried up, often times including water mixed in and allowed to party dry.

Some particals can be a dead filter material and or dead screens.

It is hard to say what since I have never knowingly seen a carbed Nomad. So the pump might be a part of the problem if it is wearing out seals or impellor parts too.

BUT the inlet valve on any carb will gag up with the slightest debris.

The first thing anyone may notice is a lean condition running. That often is missed and then the next thing anyone may notice is gas in the oil and a too full crank case for it. This is called gas oil.

I have no idea if this can happen on a carbed Nomad with a fuel pump or not, but it is common on graviety feed systems.

With gravity feed systems owners also find the carb is flowing fuel into the air filter box.

I don't know if the pump on a carbed Nomad should cut off all fuel via a valving, or is partly assisted by gravity. I would assume there is a check valve and the pump should not flow 1 single drop of fuel OFF. But I don't know that as fact.

I am guessing the carb is a CV type carb. I am also guessing the fuel pump creates something between 3 psi to 9 psi.

This morning in tennessee where I live it was around 50 degrees and I pulled out the choke and it started like new and after about a minute I pushed it back in and it ran great> I changed the fuel filter and the gas line follwing the filter and I guess it is ok now. thanks to all for your answers and time. Have a great day!

It sounds like a slightly dirty carb to me, all it takes is a speck of crud to block a passage and it will still run but your low speed idling is out of wack.
