New Horn
I really don't like the stock horn that comes on the Vaquero. Due to my limited mechanical abilities, I'd prefer a "plug and play' option. The PIAA Sports Horn claims to be such an animal but some buyers say they needed a relay. Anyone tried one of these or something similar?

I would use a relay or you risk cooking the factory horn circuit or burning out the horn button internals.

I agree with Scott. The power required by a aftermarket horn may be more than the factory setup can handle.
Better to use a relay to power from the battery and switched by the horn circuit.

I went with the Stebel and it's loud as a motha!! The horn comes with a relay but I bought a separate kit on Amazon for $20 (?) that came w all the wires n relays you need. It was pretty much plug and play. I'm like you, not super mechanically inclined and didn't want any problems trying to hook it up. Took all the guess work out for an extra $20

I just installed a Wolo Bad Boy (about the same as Stebel except cheaper). Any aftermarket horn probably draws more amps than the OEM ones and should have a relay.

Did the old mount work or did you have to make a new one.

The factory mount worked for mounting a Wolo Bad Boy horn on my 08 Nomad when I had it.

You will probable find that factory mount appears to work, until you have the front end take a hard bump and fender hits the horn. Was that way on my Voyager. But be sure, as others have said, use a relay to provide power to the horn.

I bought a horn, for a street glide, from my local HD retailer and swapped the vaquero (pancake) horn.
The only "mod" I had to do was snip the plastic between the 2 connectors into 2 separate pieces, in order to fit the tynes of the HD horn, which are more apart than OEM. Horn works fine and very loud compared to the OEM. Box states plug n play from OEM. If there is a problem with this set up? What would be the cause vs OEM? Power draw comparables? |
