Swingarm Play / Movement

I have a 99 Nomad that I recently purchased with around 48k.

I just greased the rear swingarm and noticed it moves side to side almost an 1/8th of an inch.

Not sure if this is normal or not. All of the spacers and seals are in place.

I don't see any additional parts listed so I figured I'd see if anyone had any info.

Thanks!

I don't believe that it should have that much play. I believe some have shimmed the swing arm. Maybe someone will chime in with some advice. Good luck.

Its not supposed to move that much, but they all do after the nylon bushings wear after a while. Mine were moving at least that much, probably closer to a 1/4" of sideplay.
You can either buy new bushings, or shim them with some large shims. I had some spacers here in the garage that fit and used them.

Aluminum might but Teflon would wear quickly. I used steel spacers I got at ace hardware.

Anything would help but steel shims will last longer.

New seals help. What ever you do must be 1/2 to one side and the other 1/2 to the other side and the correct spec for slop is 0.002.

For where you are now you may as well use black poly pro line or well line and force in equal amounts on each end of the long bolt where the seals and spacers show, and melt the ends as best you can. I have always never liked this bogus engineering here.

Next time yu lube the swing arm you can install the swing arm bare with new seals and measure the gap better then and maybe create thrust washers your specific sizes. Geater than the OD of the frame casting the ID to fit the spacers 1/2 as thick as the gap (times 2).
