Winterizing your Bike

Having a bus with eight tires that cost $500 a piece, I.ve learned you should not store your vehicle on concrete for a prolonged period of time. I suppose this would apply to those winterizing their bike too. Wanting to pass this tip on, I searched the net for some reference to that, and while I didn’t continue with the time to find that particular reference, I did find a list of suggestions for winterizing a motorcycle. The article does not address the issue of tires on concrete, but rather they suggest moving it periodically. However, if you don't move your bike around, it has been suggested elsewhere to place a piece of wood or plastic beneath your tires. Something like your wife’s cutting boards (when she isn’t lQQk’n).

Good tips Mr. Ron, since I'm in Austin I'm lucky and dont have to winterize, I RIDE all year round. :-))))

I really feel bad for people like Doc and those un-named Californians.

My bike is in the shed, the shed is surrounded with 6" of snow. The temperature is 24 degrees.
It will be another 5 or 6 months before I can ride. That is what is called Winterizing :'(

Hey naugaman, did you ever get those bar chaps they were giving away on this site? I was the first to respond but they weren't what I thought they were. I told them to give them to you as you were the second to respond. I never heard anything after that.

Yes Topcat, I did get the chaps. I had made a few suggestions to the people who sent them and in another week I will be putting them to the test. This weekend we had rain in Vegas. Can you believe that? My fuel sensor went out on my bike and I will have a new one installed next week. Then I can put the chaps to the test.

Only 6" of snow? That is not enough for you to keep the bike in the shed. I guess that is what happens when you live where there are lots of trees and it is green in the summer.

Yeah, only 6" of snow. I could get it to the road but then I would have to deal with the ice and sand. I'll pass till spring. I can't get Cindy to move to Arizona :(

Im really sorry for you snow birds that have to winterize your bikes, if I had to do that I would,,,,,, yuh, something else. :-)

I whole heartedly agree with Doc! Having been born and raised in Michigan, spent two years in the Upper p***sula (can you say real cold winters and tons of snow?) while in the Air Force and then a year and a half over in Topcat's neck of the woods at Griffiss AFB in Rome, NY (tons upon tons of snow) I sure am glad to be transplanted in Georgia. It might get cold occasionaly, the coldest I've seen here in 37 years is -5, but you can ride all year long. Loving it. All you snowbirds, pack up your bikes and come south for a spell, ya hear!

Maybe for you it is in January. I will consider it spring when I can take my first ride on the bike. Probably late April or early May.

lol...I know TC...grew up in MA and upstate NY...I remember...no more frozen toes for me...thank ya very much...think my blood has thinned....when it's 53 degrees (now)...i freeze!!

I grew up in Idaho when some winters the snow would fall during spud harvest and there would still be snow on the ground the first of May when the farmers were trying to plant spuds for the summer. I have been in Vegas for over 5 years now and I am starting to get that thin blood. I still like my long rides to Idaho in the summer where it is 80 during the day. But for those of us that live in the South, winterizing is not a word we use. Even with that one or two days a year that snow will fall in Vegas.
