Going to look at 2002

If anyone can answer this before tomorrow morning I would greately appreciate the feedback. I will go tomorrow to look at a 2002 with about 15,000 miles. The bike has only been ridden a few times in the past two years. The owner started it up while I was on the phone and it started with no problems. He says there is no blueing to the pipes and only has V & N pipes. He does not know if it has other mods on it since the dealer in Iowa who sold it to him did not say so.

What do you the experts think of a bike that has been not ridden for a while? Will the FI need cleaning, will the radiator need flushing. He said he has only changed the oil on it since he has owned it and no leaks. What will need to be done? I now a new battery would be a good thing for it? What about a 15-20,000 mile check up?

All the owner's wife would tell me is that a little under $6000.00 would get it. Its on Ebay right now. Apparently they were asking alot more last week and didn't get a bid close to it. Its in goodlettsville, Tn only on the other side of the county from me. These bikes are going for much more around here. The other 2002 I found in KY is $7800.00 with all the mods, V&N, K&N, and PC on it. Its beautiful red/black with 12,000miles, one owner.

well if its in good shape it might be worth it, i would change all fluids, oil, gear, brake. i would inspect very carefully just to make sure it has never been down, i usually feel under the highway bar for any signs of scraping

I'd say that if it starts readily and winds up OK, that it'll probably be just fine. Give it a Seafoam treatment in the gas the first few tanks full, plus put some Seafoam in the oil & run it maybe 20 miles before you change the oil out. That'll loosen up the lifters and help float any grunge out of the engine when you drain it.

Brake & clutch fluids and antifreeze all need changing after every two years. It's cheap. Just do it.

If it has the original front tire (I can't imagine it having the original back) change it, and if there's any sign of sidewall cracking, change the back one soon. The back tore may have lots of tread still, but if it's 6 years old it's starting to rot & should be replaced ASAP.

You'll want to run it good, but resist the urge to go 100 MPH until the tires are qualified.

Its probably a decent bike if it starts easy and everything on it works. Maybe spray some carb cleaner in the throttle body as well to clean it up a bit.

Thanks guys, I'll see it sometime later this morning. Since I work for the govertnment, I can't drive my company car out of county, so the owner will meet me with the bike. He said the front tire was a Metzler, but like me was too fat to bend over and see what brand is on the rear.

Any places to look for leaks since I will not be going to his garage to see it?

Might be too late for your inspection trip, but never heard of any particular leak issues with the Nomad, Sounds like you'll want to get some quick releases for a saddle bag so you can check the air pressure in the rear tire regularly. :)
