67,000 mile Nomad

While sitting at a gas station in Hill City, Sd during bike week, I met Al Fonso as he arrived to get gas and to add a quart of oil to his 2000 Nomad. Al had ridden from Vermont into Wy to pick up his grand son and was now touring the Black Hills. He had just turned 67,000 miles on his bike as he pulled into the station. He states that he hasn't had any really serious problems with the bike and has ridden over 44 years and only uses the cheapest oil he can buy. He was bitching cuase he had to pay $4.00 for a quart of Conoco oil...lol. Al is on the left in the picture.

and just think, if he had used Synthetic he would have 67,001 miles on his bike and no visible dirt, his hair would not be gray, he wouldnt need glasses.

My bikes getting up there also in miles, I'll be turning 60,000 in a couple days, and I plan on putting on a lot more on this bike.

Wow. That means if we all take care of our bikes it should last for 200K miles right? :)

A few weeks back, up in Pigeon Forge TN. I met a fellow on a '99 Nomad (Red one). He had over 140,000 miles on it, and he said that the only major repair that he had done was to get the POG replaced, other than that, just the clutch spring and the cam chain tensioners. He did say that he changed the oil every 2500 miles, and used Kawi dino oil.

It wasn't stated how often he changed his oil and filter but using a quart of oil between changes isn't good. Considering our bikes only hold a little over 3 quarts. I feel that if oil is changed every 3000 miles and a quality oil is used a bike shouldn't be using that amount of oil. Just my thought on the matter.

Ive heard of a couple Nomads with over 200,000 miles on them without major repair. I dont know if I'll keep mine that long, but its nice to know that it should last.

Wow 200K! I haven't heard of a V-twin making it that far without major work. Is it common?

yep, look at the 1100 Honda v-twins. I owned a Spirit before the Nomad and knew several folks with over 100,000 miles with regular oil to. Lol

They will all say it isnt the type of oil but the frequency of changing. Dino oil is pretty good now-a-days and to me better at trapping dirt then synthetic. But what do I know.

There is a guy on another forum that had about 211,000 last time I checked and it hadn't had any major work. Just the routine stuff we talk about here. I don't think most guys keep there bikes that long, either because of age or resale value and they probably end up as parts bikes.

Wow. That's pretty impressive. It's too bad the resale on bikes with a lot of miles is so low. I'm sure a bike with 60K miles that has be well taken care of will run better and last longer than the average persons bike with 15K miles.

I had a friend with a VTX1300 that had 68K miles. She could sell the thing for more than about $3K so she just added another one to the stable instead of selling it for so cheap.
